A Historical Garbage Pail Kids Reference Guide

RELEASE
PERIOD : SEPTEMBER 1987 — PRODUCT NUMBER : 490-10

The two production runs of the 10th Series Garbage Pail Kids—aka Original
Series 10 GPK, or OS10 for short—are almost identical except for their wrappers. The
first production run wrapper can be found with the ’25¢ CHEAP’ logo with
a regular black wrapper code or with a green code & a black code; a potential
cosmetic change within the print run. This is not unique considering the
second production of the OS1 release has a pink and black coded wrapper. There
is no way to distinguish between these two different wrappers when sealed. The
second print run has no price on the wrapper and found with only the black wrapper
code. It is uncomfirmed as to which production runs the ‘white box’ and ‘die-cut’
errors can be located; they have only been reported as located within the second
production run.

The first Garbage Pail Kids release with the new face-lift
artwork that includes popped eyes, hard cracked surfaces, doll joints, slick hair,
and four digits in accordance to the settlement agreement between OAA v.
Topps that followed the lawsuit settled during the OS7 release and allowed both
the OS8 and OS9 sets to be released since they were in production. The other big
change was GPK could no longer have the curved CPK-like logo and introduced the
banner-style logo first seen on the OS9 retail poster and movie promotional merchandise.

CARD SET : 78 CARDS + 8 VARIATIONS
CARD VARIATIONS: 379a, 379a, 379b, 379b,

92 TOTAL CARD SET : 86 CARDS + 6 ERRORS

Topps began their cross-promotional compaign starting with the OS9 set and
ending with the OS10 set to promote the summer release of The Garbage Pail
Kids Movie
released on August 22, 1987, produced by both the Atlantic Entertainment
Group and the Topps Chewing Gum Company. Paramount Home Video scored the distribution
rights in 1988 for the U.S. VHS and laserdisc releases. The New Product Development
team had artist David Burke tested out on the card fronts, best known for his
Ren & Stimpy Show from 1991, to paint alongside full-time artists John
Pound, Tom Bunk and James Warhola for the set; this however would be the only
set that Wray provided artwork for.

PRODUCTION ARTWORK — BITS &
BOBS BACKSTORY —ANNOTATED NOMENCLATURE

—
The first set to display the Garbage Pail Kids with
its New Iteration Look that is less Cabbage Patch
Kids-like in appearance. Going forward, the remaining GPK releases, for OS11 through
the unpublished OS16 sets, will also take on this new look and feel.

—
The set contains four Die-Cut
Errors
that are flipped and upside down that can be located for cards 385a
PHIL ‘Er Up and 385b Chuckin’
CHARLIE
, both with the red The Garbage Gang header on the backside, along
with cards 402a Lunchpail GAIL and 402b Lunchbox
STU
. The incorrect die-cut goes through the ‘PEEL HERE’ arrow instead of
correctly underneath it. This error occurs when resetting of the die-cutting plates
during or in between a production run.

—
The first GPK set to have the PEEL
HERE
arrow
pointing higher up compared
to the previous ‘PEEL HERE’ arrows for OS1 through OS9. Going forward the remaining
Garbage Pail Kids releases, for OS11 through the unpublished OS16 sets, will also
have this new higher positioned arrow.

—
The only Garbage Pail Kids set to have only
one Blue Header within the entire release
for cards 404a Airy MARY and 404b Hissy
MISSIE
; possibly due to the red hair ribbon. Peculiarly, the remaining
card fronts in the set all have red Garbage Pail Kids header.

—
The first GPK set to have the new Banner-style
Header
due to the lawsuit; Topps can no longer use the old, curved Garbage
Pail Kids logo suggestive of the Cabbage Patch Kids logo. The banner-style header
can be seen first within the OS9 retail poster and on promotional material for
The Garbage Pail Kids Movie.

—
The Completed
Puzzles for the OS10 set are sequential with the
OS9 set which contained the I-puzzle and J-puzzle. The puzzles continue to contain
21 pieces and the set has two puzzles much like the OS2, OS3, OS5 and OS9 sets
for card characters 379a Locked DORIAN and 379b SIDNEY
Kidney
for the K-puzzle and 397a Cleaned
Up CLINT
and 397b Sucked Up
STEFAN
for the L-puzzle.

—
The OS10 Retail Poster
is the same character image as the OS9 retail poster, a new OS10 character is
not used. The poster color has been simply changed from OS2 blue to OS1 pink with
the red ‘ALL NEW! 9TH SERIES‘ changed to the black ‘ALL
NEW! 10TH SERIES
‘. The set was released in June and the movie released
in August of 1987, so the OS9 poster states ‘Coming This Summer To A Theatre Near
You!’, whereas the OS10 poster simply states ‘At A Theatre Near You’—without
an exciting exclamation mark, since the set was released in September, after the
August movie release. Note: the wax wrapper movie ad remains unchanged.

—
The second set with a major Printing
Error
, in this case, one that caused a white square space to be left under
the Garbage Pail Kids banner, to the right of the smoke, where the picture wasn’t
completely printed for cards 384a Flamin’ RAYMOND
and 384b Hot TODDY.

—
The only Garbage Pail Kids set with a variation
Wrapper that can be found with two different wrapper
code colors for the same wrapper; otherwise, the second production wrapper for
OS1 also contains two different colors.

—
The set contains an unofficial Signature
by the artist, Tom Bunk. The Topps company has never given any specific credit
for their licensed artists, especially during the 80’s. Cards 393a JESS Express
and 393b Choo-Choo TRINA have the name ‘Peeping TOM’ graffitied on the subway
train that stands for the OS3 character 114b Peepin’ TOM and for artist Tom Bunk.
Other GPK nomenclature found on the train include OS1 characters for cards 8a
ADAM Bomb, 5b JAY Decay
—tagged twice,
22a Junky JEFF, 33a Mad MIKE, OS3 character for card 116a Eerie ERIC, OS4 character
for card 126a Armpit BRITT, OS5 character for card 205a Hot ROD and OS7 character
for card 279a Short MORT, as well as containing Bunk’s son’s name, Ben.

—
The only GPK set with a card containing three
different reverse card Variations backs for cards
379a Locked DORIAN and 379b SIDNEY Kidney.

—
The first Garbage Pail Kids set with a Slanted
Header
, for cards 406a Shopping CARTER and 406b Super MARCUS, that show
the logo being smashed amongst the groceries in the shopping cart; the slanted
header returns for a character in the OS16 set.

—
The sixth set to contain the GPK
Acronym
found within the card artwork; the GPK acronym found on the front
of the subway train—seen completely on the ‘Artwork Gallery’ page, of cards
393a JESS Express and 393b Choo-Choo TRINA and the GPK acronym found on the T-shirt
of cards 408a Lickin’ LEON and 408b Rat-Sucker RANDALL.

—
The Garbage Pail Kids set contains the light-blue
Nameplate, but not the light-pink namplate for this
release.

—
In 1987, after the OAA vs. Topps lawsuit,
Tom Bunk was instructed to create GPK Model Sheets
to demonstrate the new changes which were sent out to the artists as guidelines
for the remaining releases. “At some point we had to change the appearance
of the Garbage Pail Kids because they looked too much like the Cabbage Patch Kids.
So I had to make a model sheet showing the changes. Even the logo had to be changed,
the eyes changed, the mouth, et cetera.”—Tom Bunk. Below are the original
model sheet sketch artwork and the four final model sheet panels showcasing the
many modifications to the Garbage Pail Kids characters.

*

—
The original Concept
and pencil rough for the character on cards 410a Scratching Pole PAUL and 410b
Clawed CLAUDE came from artist John Pound and later sold to James Warhola to complete.

*

—
Pictured below are artist Tom Bunk’s unpublished
Display Box artwork that was created for the OS9
set and also tested for the OS10 set. The artwork was completed before the new
model sheets came into affect but was pulled from either GPK release. The OS9
box characters still have the CPK look depicted in a very violent last scenario
in response to the lawsuit outcome. The OS10 design was eventually changed slightly
due to the new artwork guidelines; oval eyes, three fingers, et cetera. The cards
later released in the UK and internationally post lawsuit were translated from
The Garbage Gang title; the new logo can be found on the backs of the OS9 cards
and the dealer ad poster. Below are two different sketch designs, one with a Cabbage
Patch Kids’ head being chopped off with two OS10 box artwork color concepts and
the other without the CPK head being scissored along with the final artwork.

*

—
In October of 2005, the Topps Vault auctioned
off two unpublished Acetate Cards intended for the
OS10 set through eBay. The first card was a name change for characters 385a PHIL
‘Er Up and 385b Chuckin’ CHARLIE whose nomeclature was changed from 385b LUKE
Puke; this name had already been used in the OS5 set for card 170b LUKE Puke.
The second piece was drawn and painted by John Pound for card 408a Hole In JUAN
and 408b LOUIE Kablooey; but much like the OS16 unpublished Tom Bunk gun piece,
it was pulled at the last minute for the sensitive topic of suicide and replaced
with cards 408a Lickin’ LEON and 408b Rat-Sucker RANDALL. The card for 408a Hole
In JUAN was finally released in the Abrams 2012 Garbage Pail Kids book detailing
the original series artwork for the first five GPK sets as bonus card 1 of 4.

*

—
Artist and writer Jay Lynch Completed the
gags for the reverse card Comic Backs artwork, finishing
the color roughs and the final art; Gary Whitney assisted with working on the
final artwork. The comic title now contains the The Garbage Gang® registered
trademark symbol, much like the Garbage Pail Kids logo for the OS1 set, but the
retail ad poster still retains the The Garbage Gang™ trademark symbol.

*

—
For the OS10 set, artist Bill
Wray
, who later went on to do incredible work with Ren and Stimpy, was
asked to draw a GPK by Art Spiegelman. “I was heavily art directed so it’s
hard to tell if the piece was touched up or not. I can tell that it’s my painting,
one of the giveaways it’s mine is how the color is kind of normal, Topps wanted
garish color.”—Bill Wray. Besides the one GPK piece that was created
and published for cards 403a HUNTER Punter and 403b Fractured FRANCIS, another
rough sketch was turned in several times but never used which was the idea of
a body builder’s arm with the Kid’s head as a bicep muscle. Because Art was so
busy, he was unable to art direct Bill, so no other work was completed or commissioned.
More information on this piece can be found within the ‘ART GALLERY‘
page.

*

—
Artist Bob Fingerman,
from the Queens NYC area, was also tested out for the card-front artwork during
this period,
“I really wish I could
remember what limited contributions I made to the early GPK cards. I tried out
for the front, but my painting skills weren’t up to snuff at that point. I’m talking
1987 or 88. I’m almost certain I did some of the backs.” Fingerman did indeed
paint a GPK-like tribute for Cracked Magazine showcasing their mascot as
a janitor in the process of sweeping his own banner-style GPK card. Fingerman
(https://www.bobfingerman.com/) would go on to work on the IDW GPK Hollywood deluxe
cover in 2015 for the Methane MAX character.

*

—
There are several Unpublished
Garbage Pail Kids paintings from 1987 that were intended for the OS10 set, by
artist John Pound, who completed a Kid in a wheelchair ‘jumping’ off of a diving
board, by artist James Warhola, who completed two pieces—a kid being branded
& a brick being tossed through a stained glass window, and by artist Tom Bunk,
who finished work on a Kid in an oven. All artwork pulled from the release for
various reasons and remain unpublished; larger images could not be located for
printing for later bonus card releases.

*

—
The following Tom Bunk Color
Roughs
were finished in 1987 and were intended for the OS10 set or a later
release. A Kid being baked in an oven—the final artwork can be seen above
where arms and hands with cooking mitts were added, a baby Kid kangaroo in its
mother’s pouch, and a Kid using his long tongue to run snot down to water the
flowers. In July of 2015, Topps released their 30th Anniversary set that contained
a ‘Cutting Room Floor’ subset with two of the images for the kangaroo-kid and
snot-slide concepts re-envisioned and painted by artist Tom Bunk; as cards 3a
Green JEAN and 3b Runny RON and cards 4a Jokester JOEY and 4b PETER Pouch.

*

—
GPK Flowcharts
were created for the later Garbage Pail Kids sets which showed the art director
how the progress of the new set was going.

It displayed what each artist was working on, which concept piece and the stage
in which the painting had been completed
.
Oftentimes, concept pieces were denied and the department tried to work them into
later sets. A list of additional concept pieces was found at the bottom of the
flowchart in case pieces could not be used. The OS10 set contained the following
ideas which either replaced any denied concept pieces within the set, were saved
for a later release or never saw the light of day: buzzsaw (reworked for OS13),
VCR (OS15), dental flossing, head out of butt – boxer (OS14), pencils through
eyes, as a sneaker (OS15), bag of GG with UPC, tape dispenser (OS11), roach motel,
trash can kid, jester cutting off foot in guillotine – laughs, bagpipe (OS15),
head in subway door (ANS4), maneating fish (Trash Can Trolls), wind up – key in
eye, wrung out kid – like towel (OS11).
