The
nightmare returns, the “Revenge of Oh, the Horror-ible” 2019 Series
1 (aka “2019S2” project, for short) bi-yearly thematic GPK set
announcement was released by the Topps Company, Inc. on Wednesday May 15, 2019,
with hobby and retail electronic sell sheets breaking down the source material
with mock-up promotional images. The horrible and hellish set was scheduled to
be released on Wednesday, September 25, 2019, and stated that “Oh, the Horror-ible
is back, featuring all-new art parodying classic and current monsters, horror
films, and more!”.

def’n:
OH, THE HORROR —
The phrase stems from the literary excerpt “The horror! The horror!”
taken from Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness” novella published in
1899.
def’n: HORROR — An intense feeling
of fear, fright, panic or disgust.
def’n: HORRIBLE
— To cause horror. Terrible, shocking, gruesome, ghastley, et ctera. informal.
Something very unpleasant.

The GPK
series includes all-new artwork and contributions by artists Brent Engstrom, Joe
Simko, David Gross, Smokin’ Joe McWilliams, Jessica Kanzer (editor, art director)
and Mark Von Ohlen (brand manager); along with original series artwork by veteran
artists John Pound, Tom Bunk and David Burke. The packaging would re-introduce
the usage of an Original Series character on boxes and wrappers. For the first
print run, each foil or plastic pack (with a suggested retail price of $1.99)
contains eight sticker cards, except for the Hobby Collector Edition box with
exclusive premium content packs that contain eight stickers per pack or may contain
seven stickers per pack with a special insert.

A ‘Slasher Film’ Promo Card
was handed out at the 2019 New York Comic Con, over the weekend of Oct 3rd through
the 6th, during the Topps booth signing with artist JOE Simko on Fri Oct 4th from
4-5pm. A ticket from the Topps booth was necessary beforehand; per the Topps blog:
“The man behind so many of our favorite Garbage Pail Kids characters will
be signing for 50 fans at the Topps booth!” The front of the artwork has
the autograph card nameplate for signing purposes.

—
Although, NOT a part of the 2019S2 release, artist
DAVID Gross had suggested Black Light cards be introduced
to the GPK brand. Besides their usual ‘rainbow’ of parrallel splatter card inserts,
Topps did print special black light cards for the base set that read ‘Black Light
Reactive Card’ on the backside of the card under the GPK logo.

—
The splatter effect for the back of the Horror
Victims subset is different from the rest of the subset card backs with
bold red blood and a 3D-type font. It’s too bad the rest of the set didn’t have
this same blood splatter effect and differentiated from the previous Yearly Series
releases. The cards number 1a of 5 to 5b of 5 and located within the blaster value
boxes.

—
A ‘Horror Film Poster Parodies’ Promo
Card was handed out at the 2019 New York Comic Con, over the weekend of
Oct 3rd through the 6th, by the Topps booth on Saturday, Oct 5th only. The artwork
was created by artist Smokin’ JOE McWilliams. Per the Topps blog: “Exclusive
promo cards are also available each day, while supplies last: GPK (Saturday)”.
More information on all of the promo cards and exclusive set can be found on the
‘Cons & Fests’ page of this website.

—
A limited edition trading card of the ‘MO Bile’
character was inserted into packs and boxes of the 2019S2 release to help promote
the the game app by Jago Studios for ‘Garbage Pail
Kids The Game’. The artwork was created by artists JOE Simko and a ‘Bleeding Heart
Award’ could be found on the backside. More information located on the ‘GPK Licenses’
page of this site.

—
