RELEASE
PERIOD : MARCH 2013

The Brand-New
Series 2, aka BNS2, for short, GPK set was released in the late winter
of 2013 by Topps, Inc. and distributed in March — only six months after the
BNS1 set released in October of 2012. The GPK series includes all-new artwork
by veteran GPK artists Tom Bunk and James Warhola, but is mainly comprised of
artwork by returning next-generation GPK artists Brent Engstrom, Layron DeJarnette,
Mark Pingitore, Joe Simko, John Cebollero and newcomer JungHwa Im, along with
concept artwork by Colin Walton (art director), Dave Gross, Tom Bunk, Mark Pingitore,
Neil Camera, Joe Simko, Brent Engstrom and Jeff Zapata. Newcomer Pat Barrett completed
a large amount of content for the set; he finished all of the artwork for the
Foldees and Glow-in-the-Dark chase insert cards, as well as wrote all of the GPK
comics and finished half of the artwork, as well as assisted with sketch cards.
The brand manager at Topps for GPK among other products is Stephen Dumas for this
release.

A few Tom Bunk comparison Color
Roughs for the BNS3 set for cards 67a Egg SHELDON & 67b Cracked CHRIS
and 116a Dead TED, 116b Deliver ROY & 116c JAY Decay. The rough artwork for
card 67 is drastically different from the final artwork, showcasing a brown egg
and the spoon dipping into the yellow ‘brain’ yolk instead of coming down and
cracking the egg. The sketch and color rough for card 116 shows the naming changes
for the pizza joint — starting out as Doom’s and Doomino’s Pizza (a parody
of Dominio’s Pizza) and changing to Jay’s Pizza and then Jay’s Organic Pizza for
the final artwork. More color roughs can be found within the Bunk Art BNS section.

— An Abrams
16-month GPK Wall Calendar for 2014 will be release
in August of 2013 with four new LOST GPK bonus cards. The card images can be located
within the Abrams GPK Book & Calendar section; located on the main page within
the Yearly/Thematic section.

—
GPK Art
Directer Colin Walton is back once again
for the Brand-New Series GPK set as well as coming up with concept ideas and performing
other tasks for the new series. Although the art director did not want the ‘returning
character’ cards within the base set; the Brand team decided against it.

—
The set contains several Parody
Images of popular people of past years; real persons and pretend. One image
in particular, for bonus cards B11a Giant GILLIAN and B11b FAYE Tall, portrays
the poster image for the 1958 American science fiction flick Attack of the
50 Foot Woman.

—
The BNS2 GPK digital Sell
Sheet displays a mock-up picture of cards 56a MEL Tin and 56b Marsh
MARLOW, these published cards have a light blue nameplate and different names,
whereas the mock-up image has a red nameplate with the name Roast TED.

—
Two GPK Veterans are
back for the BNS2 set, artist Tom Bunk, who completed six images for the series,
and James Warhola, who completed several images for the new set. This is the first
‘new’ GPK set where new artwork from John Pound is not present since his retirement
from commercial artwork; although several of his artwork pieces can be found in
the Glow-in-the-Dark and 3D subsets.
