Pingitore’s
titles and products are wonderfully influenced by the 80’s nostalgic toy and cartoon
era.
His appreciation
for parody and Garbage Pail Kids can be seen on his Magic Marker Art’s website
in the form of his personal mascot, a self-caricature modeled after OS2 cards
74a MARK Bark and 74b Kennel KENNY painted by John Pound with a bone in the character’s
mouth. This would be the first ‘Mark’ nomenclature within the GPK canon; an earlier
version had the canine-like character biting down on a No.2 pencil instead of
a pink magic marker.

MID-2013

Although
not a SCK, Pingitore created a caricature painting of himself titled ‘MARK Pinkytore’
for the 30 Years of Garbage documentary. The artwork was completed earlier in
2013 in time for the Kickstarter campaign that ended unsuccessfully in January
2014. The image was used to showcase the available premiums one received when
pledging. The campaign was then brought over to Indiegogo mid-2014 and ended successfully
in November 2014. The doc film was produced and the cards printed by Peel Here
Productions, LLC and released to backers mid-2016.

A
set of 3 promo cards of the movie poster + a set of artist promo cards could be
received by pledging $25 on Kickstarter or selecting the $75 perk on Indiegogo.
The participating artists include: Tom Bunk, Layron Dejarnette, Brent Engstrom,
Dave Gross, Mark Pingitore, Joe Simko, and Jeff Zapata. Collect parody cards:
Tom JUNK, Layron DejarnWET, Brent THINGstrom, David GROWTH, Mark PINKY-tore, Joe
SLIMko and Jeff ZeBATHEAD! Three additional promo cards, the movie poster and
two directors (Zapata and Simko) was handed out by distributor Indican Pictures
in 2017.

JUN
2014

Pingitore started
to create a Slop Culture Kids image in June of 2014 and the process was posted
to Instagram over several months. June: TREY Live / Obey JAY – Sketch for a future
custom GPK painting. July: Custom #theylive #GPK #garbagepailkids TREY Live /
Obey JAY color rough. And, finished in August. Prints were added to the Magic
Maker Art store during June of 2015 and sold for $15 for each character and sold
as a Threadless T-shirt with the character behind a Presidential podium much like
the OS2 concept in 2016. The artwork was later submitted for the Gallery 1988
’30 Years Later (1988)’ art exhibit show that ran from April 6th through the 21st,
2018.

The
They Live
1988 science fiction thriller film is a story of a wanderer who
fights to free a subdued population from mind-controlling aliens by subliminal
messages. The main character discovers a pair of sunglasses that enables the wearer
to see how the world is being dominated by aliens. in the artwork the alien being
is sporting a ‘Hot Rod!’ 80’s fashion button which pays tribute to the main protagonist,
Nada (= ‘nothing’), played by actor Roddy Piper, born Roderick George Toombs,
but best known as “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, the ex-professional villain wrestler
with the nickname “Hot Rod” for displaying his trademark “Scottish”
rage and personality traits. The artwork would later find itself within the Horrorible
Kids Series 3 release in August 2018 as cards 32a and 32b with the same nomenclature.

The
nineth custom SCK image that found it’s way into the Horrorible Kids set was for
cards 9a Beetle BRUCE and 9b Juicy JEFF was originally created for the Gallery
1988 group show event ‘Crazy 4 Cult : Back in L.A.’, titled ‘BRI O. Exorcist /
BRUCE Juice’, that ran from December 12th through the 28th, 2014. The art show
was a tribute to a plethora of cult movies including ‘Beetlejuice’.

The
character can also be found as a poster print released in October 2018, on a skateboard
deck released on October 2020, and in enamel pin format, released in April 2021.
NOTE: MORE INFO & IMAGES WITHIN THE HORRORIBLE KIDS 1-3 SECTION

The
1988 Beetlejuice film synopsis revolved around a recently deceased young
couple who become ghosts and haunt their former home along with an obnoxious ghost
named Betelgeuse (pronounced “Beetlejuice”) from the Netherworld who
tries to scare away the new inhabitants.
The
event artwork nomenclature ‘BRI O. Exorcist’ — bio-exorcist — is the
freelance work thate Betelgeuse performs, he works with ghosts to scare the living
from their homes. And, ‘BRUCE Juice’, a forename and word rhyme for the second
half of Beetlejuice’s name.

NOV
2015 — MAR 2016
—
The first seven characters found in the Horrorible Kids Series 1
set were
originally released as limited edition Art Prints under the Slop Culture Kids
moniker; a wordplay on the term ‘pop culture’ — modern popular culture conveyed
through mass and social media and aimed particularly at younger people —
where ‘slop’ is defined as a waste material, and a mash-up of the three-worded
brand name ‘Garbage Pail Kids’. Around 10 characters found themselves on Threadless
T-shirts that went for sale in February 2016.

The prints were posted
to Mark’s website in March of 2016 for $70. Some nomenclature slightly changed
to the sticker card version and Jason Voorhees was given his infamous mask to
wear. The characters became available on sticker for the first time, in sheet
format, in the middle of 2016 also under the ‘Slop Culture Kids’ clothing line
with a ‘Horror Kids – Series 1’ title; a precursor to Horrorible Kids title. ‘Silenced
LAMBERT’ was originally created for Gallery 1988 for their Crazy 4 Cult : Say
Hi To The Bad Guy collection titled ‘Fava DEAN / ChiANDY’; different nomenclature
than the later card release. NOTE: MORE INFO & IMAGES WITHIN

PRE-
JUL 2015

Another custom SCK image was created for the Gallery 1988 group event ‘Clue’ and
titled ‘Clue LES / HUGH Dunnit’ that ran from June 26th through July 11th, 2015.
The art show was a tribute to the infamous who-done-it cult movie ‘Clue’, starring
actor Tim Curry as the butler Wadsworth. The nomenclature ‘Clue LES’, meaning
‘clueless’, explains the player or audience not knowing. The six murder weapons
can all be found in the painting. The 1985 comedy film Clue is based on
the popular board game of the same name, known as ‘Cluedo’ outside of North America,
a murder mystery game devised by Anthony E. Pratt from Birmingham, England. Manufactured
orginally by Waddingtons in 1945 and Parker Brothers and currently owned and published
by Hasbro. NOTE: CONCEPT BY MATT OLDWEILER

MAR
2015 — MAY 2016

An early custom piece created for the Gallery 1988 group show ‘Idiot box
2’, paying tribute to TV, and titled ‘ADAM N. Evil / PHIL Mation’ consisted of
a dual He-Man / Skeletor mash-up character, a split-personality painting made
popular by John Pound with characters found within the OS2 and OS3 Garbage
Pail Kids
sets. The custom final artwork image was posted online during March
of 2015 and an image of the character a decal sticker followed in May of 2016
s created for Pingitore’s Slop! Culture Kids clothing line, so far only T-shirts,
that came free with purchase of an online order. The character was later included
in the Disasters of the Universe parody set released in August of 2016, three
months later, with a ‘Clashed KELDOR’ b-name.

Trademark
details: the word mark ‘Slop Culture Kids’ was filed on February 11th,
2016,
several months prior to the decal sticker release; note the ‘Slop Culture Kids
© Magic Marker Art’ trademark line. The ‘mark drawing’ is defined as an illustration:
a drawing with word(s)/letter(s)/number(s) in stylized form typeset. And, the
‘description of mark’ is defined as: the mark consists of the blue word “Slop!”
melted text above the words “Culture Kids” in a straight orange to yellow
pop art style, however, color is not claimed as a feature of the mark.

A custom
SCK image found it’s way into the Horrorible Kids Series 4 set, released in August
of 2019, for cards 78a LOU Pan and 78b Dark DAVID was originally created for the
Gallery 1988 group show event ‘Crazy 4 Cult 9’, titled ‘Dark DAVID / LOU Pain’,
that ran from November 20th through December 5th, 2015. The art show was a tribute
to a plethora of cult movies including the film ‘Big Trouble in Little China’.
Prints were available at NYCC along with prints for a Big Trouble in Little China
parody ‘AL In The Reflexes / Jacked JACK’ and a Mad Max parody ‘Furious MAXIMUS
/ WALT Witness’. NOTE: MORE INFO & IMAGES WITHIN THE HORRORIBLE

The
synopsis for the 1986 Big Trouble in Little China film, starring Kurt Russell,
involves truck driver Jack Burton getting caught up in crazy conflict San Francisco’s
Chinatown rescuing his best friend’s fiancee from Lo Pan and breaking the ancient
curse that keeps the antogonist a fleshless and immortal spirit.
The
event artwork nomenclature ‘Dark DAVID’ references Lo Pan’s alias ‘David Lo-Pan’,
or simply ‘Dave’. And, ‘LOU Pain / LOU Pan’ — a Low Pain (threshold) —
a parody of the evil scorcerer’s surname ‘Lo Pan’, sometimes written and seen
as ‘Lo-Pan’.

Another Slop!
Culture Kids custom artwork paid tribute to another popular pastime of the era,
video gaming and the nostalgic NES, the Nintendo Entertainment System. The piece
was titled BONNIE Hunter — bounty hunter — and Super SAM — Super
(Metroid) SAMUS — for the character artwork that was specifically created
for the Gallery 1988 group show even titled ‘Console Wars’, a Super Nintendo and
Sega themed show that ran from Dec 11th through the 31st, 2015. Although this
parody version of Samus did not find her way into any Magic Marker Art parody
set, a different iteration fo Samus Aran can be found in the 2018 Nintendopes
parody set release as cards 4a SAMUS I. Ran and 4b Met ROY.

Pingitore
had the artwork available for sale on his website during November 2015 along with
some Designer Con prints for his custom parody artwork of the Breaking Bad TV
program ‘Heis N. BERT / BLAKE In. White’ (previouly named Heisen BERT) and a Back
to the Future parody print titled ‘Out A. Tim III / 1.21 Giga WYATT’; with similar
nomenclature of an earlier commissioned piece titled ‘Outa TIM / Messy MARTY’.

Another
SCK custom artwork piece by Pingitore titled ‘Mer MANNY / BALOO Steel’ was specifically
created for the Gallery 1988 group show even titled ‘Zoolander : Really Really
Really Ridiculously Good Looking Art Show’, a Zoolander tribute themed show that
ran from January 9th through the 30th, 2016, poking further fun at the male modeling
industry. The character is modeled after the Garbage Pail Kids image for OS3 cards
108a Smelly SALLY and 108b Fishy PHYLLIS painted by John Pound. The nomenclature
‘Mer MANNY’ equals merman and ‘BALOO Steel’ which stands for Blue Steel, the main
protagonist in the movie Zoolander portrayed by actor Ben Stiller. NOTE:

A
very close concept and pose could later be found within the Disasters of the Universe
Series 1 set released in August 2016 as cards 9a Mer MANNY, with the same a-name,
and 9b Gilled GIL, both body of works appearing in a similar seducing and seductive
position.

Pingitore created
a parody of The Fly character titled ‘BRENDAN Fly / In SETH D. Cide” that
was specifically created for the Gallery 1988 group show event ’30 Years Later’
that ran from March 25th through April 9th, 2016. The art show was a tribute to
all of the cult movies that were released during 1986 including Big Trouble in
Little China, Little Shop of Horrors, Labyrinth, Pretty in Pink, Aliens, et cetera.

The Fly (1986 drama/sci-fi) film synopsis involves a scientist,
Seth Brundle (played by actor Jeff Goldbum), who completes a teleportation device
and tests the machine out on himself; an undetected housefly slips into the device
during the process and the character slowly changes into a fly due to cell muatation
complications and turns into a monster.

Pingitore
created a different concept for his Horrorible Kids Series 4 release for cards

8a Dusk Til DAWN and 8b Seductive SELMA that was specifically created for the
Gallery 1988 group show event ’20 Years Later’ that ran from July 1st through
July 16th, 2016. The art show was a tribute to all of the cult movies that were

Day, Space Jam, Romeo & Juliet, et cetera.

The From Dusk till Dawn
(1996 horror/crime) film synopsis involves fugitive bank robbers and brothers
on the run from the F.B.I. and Texas police end up at a strip club where the employees
and strippers are all revealed to be vampires.

Movie
actor Selma Hayek played the part of Santánico Pandemonium, the
primary Queen Vampire of the “Titty Twister” strip club in the middle
of desolate Mexico. The name is based on the Mexican Nunsploitation film of the
same name.

Pingitore’s
tribute piece, a character parody playing homage to John Pound’s OS1 cards 9a
Boozin’ BRUCE and 9b Drunk KEN was created for his Slop Culture Kids line early
in 2016 titled ‘Tipsy TYRION / Half MANNY’. The image was sold as prints and as
a Threadless T-shirt online. The painting showcases the true non-reversed OS1
imagery that Topps corrected for the Abrams GPK book, but changed up the animals
to coincide with the ‘Game of Thrones’ sigils: a ‘yellow lion with green barf
for the house of Lannister instead of the ‘green snake’, the ‘blue direwolf’ of
house Stark instead of the ‘blue bunny’ and a ‘pink dragon’ of house Targaryen
instead of the ‘pink elephant’. A similar tribute piece can also be located within
the Marveless Kids parody set for cards 6a Tanked TONY and 6b DAMON In A Bottle
in the reversed OS1 position.

MAR
2016

Pingitore created
a parody of the Punisher character in March of 2106 specifically intended for
two future conventions; the Wizard World in Philadelphia that took place on June
2nd through the 5th and the SuperToyCon that took place August 5th through the
7th of that year. His Instagram post on March 21st stated: Punish EARL / Furious
FRANK – Starting on some projects for Cons this year
. The Slop! Culture Kids
character image was sold on T-shirt for $25 at both shows.

The artwork
would later show up in the Marveless Kids release in May of 2019 as cards 11a
Punish EARL and 11b Furious Frank; the same nomenclature from three years prior.

Punisher
is a crime fighter starring in Marvel Comics whose first appearance was ‘The Amazing
Spider-Man’ #129 in February 1974. The ‘Furious Frank’ name stems from the character’s
true alias ‘Frank Castle’, born ‘Francis Castiglione’, an Italian-American vigilante
who punishes as part of his crime fighting and driven by revenge. NOTE:

SEPT
2016

Pingitore created
a parody of the character Judge Dredd titled ‘Dread PHIL / Judge N. JERRY’ that
was specifically created for the Gallery 1988 group show event ‘Crazy 4 Cult X’
that ran from October 21st through November 5th, 2016. The art show was a tribute
to a plethora of cult movies including the 1995 science fiction action film ‘Judge
Dredd starring Sylvester Stallone’.

The movie is based on the comic book
character of the same name and takes place in a dystopian future where the main
protagonist, Joseph Dredd, is convicted for a crime he did not commit. Dredd is
a Judge by day, a police officer with instant filed judiciary powers.

The character nomenclature, ‘Dread PHIL’ meaning ‘dreadful’: involving great suffering,
fear or unhappiness. An event that is extremely bad and/or serious. The ‘Judge
N. JERRY’ name is short for the phrase ‘judge, jury and executioner’, meaning
that the person is in charge of every decision made and that they have the power
to be rid of whomever they choose, and by means they see fit.

JUN
2016

Pingitore
created a parody painting poking fun at the popular M.U.S.C.L.E. figures toy craze
from the ’80s. On July 16th on his Instagram account, Mark mentioned; KENNY
Kuman / Muscular MANNY – A preview of a painting I did for the GPK-Con exclusive
card set that will be available at #SuperToyCon in Las Vegas in a few short weeks
.
The image would be released as card P7 at Orleans Arena Las Vegas August 5th through
the 7th without any nomenclature as a regular card and also as a prismatic card
printed by GPK and Wacky Warehouse for the Super Toy Con.

The toy line was licensed in 1985 for the American market and called M.U.S.C.L.E.,
aka Muscleman, an English title derived from the Kinnikuman anime
and manga franchise in Japan which is based on professional wrestling.

The original line lauched in Japan in 1983 and called Kinkeshi (‘keshi’ meaning
‘eraser’), a popular line of monochromatic collectible erasers. The U.S. version
uses a harder rubber than Kinkeshi. The nomeclature created by Pingitore but not
used on the cards ‘KENNY Kuman’ = Kinnikuman, the anime that the Kinkeshi
figures are based on, and ‘Muscular MANNY’ = muscleman, the English title for
Kinnikuman. In 2020, a prism sticker of the character was released as part
of a 4-card promo pack, as an extra, and available at the ToyCon ‘Gross Xperience’
in Las Vegas from March 13 through 15 and online afterwards, while supplies lasted.

OCT

Pingitore teamed
up with Toy Snobs in October 2017 for a T-shirt and enamel pin release for a RoboCop
GPK-esque parody titled ‘ROBERTO Cop’. Mark’s Instagram re-post mentioned:
I worked on this t-shirt collab with Toy Snobs, releasing 10/27! Repost @toysnobs
··· 10/27 Mark Pingitore x Toy Snobs. A sneak peek of just
the character’s face was posted to Instagram on August 17th, 2017 by Toy Snobs,
and the T-shirt and pin went live on October 27th, 2017.

The RoboCop movie
was released in 1987 and revolves around a Detroit MI police officer who is mortally
wounded in the line of duty and transformed into a superhero cyborg that battles
crime.

The T-shirt has a ‘card number’ 84a next to the Toy Snobs logo, a nostalgic ‘EAT
HERE
‘ parody ‘PEEL HERE‘ arrow, playing up the ‘cops,
coffee and donuts’ stereotype, and a ‘Toy Snobs x Mark Pingitore : 1984 Never
Grow Up, Inc.’ trademark line under the ‘ROBERTO Cop’ nameplate, all paying tribute
to the Garbage Pail Kids card layout.

NOV
2017

Pingitore
created a parody painting poking fun at the humorous holiday movie A Christmas
Story from 1983, specifically the character’s pink bunny pajamas and the Red Ryder
BB gun he really wants as a gift. On December 18th on his Instagram account, Mark
mentioned, “Rifled RALPHIE / Red RYDER – This art will be used for one of
the cards for an exclusive set available at Gross Card Con, which is only about
two months away! I had to post it for Christmas though. Thanks to sircreate for
letting me run with his concept.” The image would be released as prismatic
card P6 at Cirucs Circus Las Vegas February 23rd through the 25th without any
nomenclature and printed by GPK and Wacky Warehouse for the Super Toy Con.

Topps requested that the showrunners to change the name and Gross Card Con was
coined. A sketch and color rough for the infamous leg lamp also appeared on Pingitore’s
social media during December 2015 in time for Christmas titled ‘Frag E. LAYLA
/ MARJORY Ward’. A second GCC image by Pingitore was released for card #9 using
his previous artwork ‘Tipsy TYRION / Half MANNY’ created around March 2016, also
printed with no nomenclature. The Rifled RALPHIE image would later be released
as a Christmas card in 2018; Mark posted on Dec 18th of that year: “Do you

LATE

Pingitore created
a parody painting poking fun at ‘Lady Justice’, the allegorical personification
of the moral code upheld by judicial systems. On January 11th on his Instagram
account, Mark mentioned, “Vegas Gross Card Con is less than two months away!
Here is one of the cards I painted for the exclusive show cards. We chose from
our unused/rejected concepts for this one, and this was an unused concept from
GPK Brand New Series 1.” The image would be released as card #19 at Westgate
Las Vegas March 1st through the 3rd without any nomenclature as a regular card
and also as a matte-finish card printed by GPK and Wacky Warehouse for the Toy
Con.

The ‘Lady Justice’, or Justitia (Latin), statue or image is pictured with a blindfold,
a scale balance, and a sword; often appearing next to Predentia who holds a mirrror
and a snake. Marks BNS concept contained the nomenclature ‘GALE Scale / Blind
JUSTICE’ (Justine?) where the character is holding an imbalanced scale of garbage
and a used toilet plunger.

MID

Pingitore
created his own version of 8-bit Zombie’s mascot ‘THRASHOR’, that has been given
several MOTU-inspired action figures and packaging. On January 21st 2019 Mark
mentioned on Instagram: “This was a super fun one I painted last year. I
love everything @8bz puts out, and was honored to give Thrashor my own spin! #8bitzombie
#8bz #thrashor #garbagepailkids #cabbagepatchkids #nes #powerglove #nowyoureplayingwithpower.”

The
artwork contains the character’s shortened name, ‘THRASH‘
on a baseball cap, the character wearing the popular Nintendo Entertainment System
(NES) Power Glove, sporting black All-Star shoes and controlling his hoverboard-like
skateboard with a NES controller.

‘8-BIT
ZOMBIE’ has released video game and popculture trading cards in the past inspired
by Garbage Pail Kids. In October, 2020, a ‘Thrash Pack’ set became available on
8bitzombie.com for $10 and included four Thrashor stickers: 1 THRASH prism sticker
(3.75″), 1 GRAVE hologram sticker (3.5″), and two GPK-inspired sticker
cards (2.5″ x 3.5″), numbering 0a THRASHOR and 0b SKATOR, which wer
printed on vintage-style card stock.

LATE
2018
—
Pingitore created a second parody painting poking fun at ‘Madballs’, specifically
the Horn Head character. On January 12th on his Instagram account, Mark mentioned:
“Here’s my second Vegas Gross Card Con card. This is for a toy themed
set.” The image would be released as card #7 at Westgate Las Vegas March
1st through the 3rd without any nomenclature as a regular card and also as a matte-finish
card printed by GPK and Wacky Warehouse for the Toy Con event.

The Horn Head character was introduced by Amtoy in the Madball Series 1 release
within their rubber ball range of toys during the mid-1980s. A violet-colored
one-eyed ogre with a single horn on top of his head, pointy ears, and a disheveled
black beard, along with a nose ring. The parody artwork shows the character with
a body, checking out a ‘PLAYTOY’ magazine, a reference to ‘PLAYBOY‘,
where the character is so excited he’s lost his head. This is a direct tribute
to the OS9 GPK characters for cards 352a HERMAN Hormone and 352b Turned-On RON
painted by artist Tom Bunk.

Giant Robot food-themed group art show that took place between August 24th through
September 11th, 2019. Mark mentioned the show on Instagram on August 11th and

my painting. #parody #garbagepailkids #cabbagepatchkids . #Repost @sarahjomarks
··· I curated an art show with @lukechueh for @giantrobot.
It opens August 24 and is all about FOOD!”

The ‘Salty SAM’ GPK-inspired
character is covered in salt and mustard with his arms twisted into a pretzel-shaped
piece of food.

The
artwork card mock-up has a ‘GO HERE‘ nostalgic ‘PEEL
HERE
‘ arrow and ‘gr2’ card number for ‘Giant Robot’. Mark mentioned the
show a second time on Instagram and social media on August 22nd: “I did this
painting for the Let’s Eat! group art show opening this Saturday, August

The
GPK World website celebrated it’s 20th anniversary in 2018, and in 2019 the webmaster
had inquired whether Mark Pingitore of Magic Marker Art could possibly commission
artwork for a new mascot for the website. Although the artist was very busy with
his continued independent releases, Ping’ was able to help celebrate the site’s
achievement by squeezing in time to sketch a concept in September and to paint
the updated Barren AARON mascot by early October.

The webmaster requested
the OS3 mash-up GPK tribute character to be sitting in the OS2 MARK Bark pose,
scratching scarab beetles out of his ear rather than fleas. Pingitore uses this
same OS2 character homage as his own MMA mascot, in caricature style.

The
GPK historian character can be seen surrounded by his personal computer (OS1 Brainy
JANEY tribute) , research material, and a nice cuppa tea.

Pingitore also worked on some digital artwork for the mascot to be used for social
media pages and potential website product to assist in running the site. Product
included a 3×3 inch round vinyl sticker, a ’20yrs’ Slop! Culture Kids Ancient
AARON promo card, and an enamel pin.
