A Historical Garbage Pail Kids Reference Guide

RELEASE PERIOD
: JANUARY 2014

The newly re-branded
‘Yearly’ 2014 Series 1 GPK set, aka as 2014S1, for short, was released in the
winter of 2014 by Topps, Inc. and distributed in January—only three months
after the exclusive BNS Mini set released online in October of 2013. The ‘Yearly’
sets would continue to be released roughly twice yearly for the next decade and
be referred to as ‘Thematic’ sets; this release contained a major 22-card winter
‘GPK Olym-Picks’ athletes subset, 10 motion cards, and 30 Olym-Picks medals, poking
fun (or ‘picking’) at the Winter Olympics games.

The GPK series includes
all-new artwork by artists Tom Bunk Brent Engstrom, Layron DeJarnette, Joe Simko,
Dave Gross, Mark Pingitore, JungHwa Im, Steve Potter and Colin Walton (art director)
along with several additional artists that assisted with autograph and sketch
cards. The brand manager for this release was Steve Dumas—his last GPK set
at Topps, with assistance from Jared Moran and Jordan Greenstein—sales and
marketing. For the first print run, each foil or plastic pack, with a suggested
retail price of $2.49, contains ten stickers, except for the Hobby Collector Edition
box which packs contain six stickers per pack with exclusive premium content.

Previews
World had the two hobby items listed as NOV131476, hobby box, and NOV131477?,
hobby collector box, with a pack price tags of SRP $2.99 and SRP $5.49, respectively,
and being in shops on February 5, 2014. Per announcement, “The Garbage Pail
Kids are a uniquely hilarious group of kids who are as endearing as they are gross.
With original hand-painted art, an endless universe of new characters, and a heavy
dose of wit, the GPK have been delivering laughs since 1985! GPK 2014 celebrates
the Olyp-Picks! The official XXII Winter Olympics will be held in February 2014,
and GPK is getting into the spirit with their very own Olym-Picks event! Popular
Garbage Pail Kids return in all their glory to showcase their hidden talents in
sports, both on traditional stickers and motion cards. The set also includes collectible
Gold, Silver, and Bronze foil medal cards featuring original GPK events such as
Synchronized Farting. Series 1 includes a 172-card case set, plus parallels, bonus
cards, sketch cards, and exciting rare hits. Then, store your collection in the
official binder! In the regular edition, 10 cards per pack, 24 packs per box.
In the Collector’s Edition, 6 cards per pack (3 base, 1 metallic red parallel,
1 full bleed canvas, 1 black parallel or 1 insert), 24 packs per box.”

—
The Card Numbering starts back at #1 for the new
GPK iteration; as well as the bonus cards. The packs remain at 10 cards per pack,
previously known as ‘Mega’ packs, at a higher SRP; whereas BNS1 had eight cards
per pack. The exception are the Hobby Collector Edition packs which contain 6
cards per pack due to the exclusive premium content.

—
The set is the eighth GPK set to contain Sketch Cards
and ‘die-cut’ or shaped sketch cards numbering 1/1, one-of-a-kind. Die-cut sketch
cards can be found within hobby boxes, inserted 1:249 packs, or within hobby collector
edition boxes, inserted 1:141, and the regular sketch cards found within retail
boxes, inserted 1:251 packs. Several GPK artists worked on the sketch cards for
this release: Tom Bunk, Brent Engstrom, Fred Harper, Joe Simko, Neil Camera, among
other artists. Besides the sketch cards located within the boxes, the artists
were given ten blank sketch card ‘returns’ from the Topps company and once approved,
could be kept, sold or auctioned — these sketch cards are often more highly
detailed and go for a higher price.

—
The textured relic cards, cloth cards, full-blood canvas cards, sepia cards, red
parallel cards, olym-picks medal cards, blank back cards and make-up-your-own-name
cards are all new types of insert Chase Cards for
the 2014S1 set. The parallels stickers, bonus cards, printing plates, motion cards,
C-name cards, sketch cards (die-cut + regular) and artist autograph cards are
all returning chase cards for the series.

—
The ninth set to have a series Checklist titled and
outlined with the blue color, after the ANS6, ANS7, Flashback sets and BNS1 through
BNS3 sets—not including the BNS Mini set. The recent base sets are so large
they need two checllists, ‘Checklist A’ and ‘Checklist B’. This is the second
GPK set checklist to detail artist and writer inclusion for the Topps set; this
hasn’t been seen since the Trash Can Trolls in 1991 and Wacky Packages this year.
The set contains no insert checklist for the chase cards.

—
The base card set contains no GPK Nomenclature in
white font , only black print in black font; this does not uphold with the bonus
cards however, where white font can be located alongside black font nomenclature.
This occured for both the ANS and Flashback sets that contained blue nameplates
with black lettering. This lettering tidbit was brought to my attention by artist
and collector Keith Webb for BNS1 who contributed several concept pieces to the
ANS3 GPK set.

—
The set contains two instances of the GPK Header
being used as part of the humor for the gag by the art director; as the grayscale
GPK header of cards 18a Dull DOROTHY & 18b Colorless COLLEEN and as the shredded-up
GPK header of bonus cards B8a Scissor HANS & B8b Cut UPTON.

—
The infamous ADAM Bomb
Mascot
character finds himself yet again on the packaging for the new release. The ADAM
Bomb character can also be found throughout the chase card insert sets, as well
as in 75th Anniversary Topps release for card #86 as himself, certifying that
he is the most recognized character in the GPK canon.

—
The fourth ‘New’ series to have A-name and B-name Bonus
Card
twins and as a hobby box exclusive: various chase cards and eight
bonus cards of four different characters.

—
Several Original Series and New GPK names can be located on bonus cards B7a BROCK
Poster (rock poster) and B7b Taped TAD for the following Nomenclature; ROCKY N.
Roll, Tom TOM, D. JAY, Hippy (Hippie) Skippy, Punk ROCKY, New Wave DAVE and Jolted
JOEL.

—
One of the recently rare subsets for the set are the eleven C-Name
Cards
that make up the OS B-name for GPK characters that were produced
as ‘short prints’—often found in sport card releases by Topps and other entertainment
products; the B-names for this release are brand new. These inserts are usually
unannounced with no odds given, do not have a published quantity and meant as
a surprise for collectors to find. However, for this release a pack ratio is given
for the C-name cards. There are no parallels of the C-name cards and can be located
within all packaging types.

—
The second GPK release to have no Puzzle Preview
cards. The newer puzzle border color, gray, can be found again within this release—which
goes well with the ‘colorless’ theme of cards 18a Dull DOROTHY & 18b Colorless
COLLEEN along with the new black puzzle border color. Topps decided against ‘puzzle
preview’ cards, also changed their Wacky Packages brand, due to the sheer size
of the new sets. The decision was based on the fact that there’s a greater chance
of receiving one of the two twin base card singles that show the completed image,
rather than just one preview card on the backside of a card.

—
In May of 2014, Topps offered the Japanese version of Bukimi
Kun
2014S1 from their online store for the SRP of $50.00. A nostalgic tribute
set for international collectors using the popular Bukimi Kun title. The holy
grail of international The Garbage Gang releases, Topps has created a new Japan
release, as an online exclusive only, with the GPK header and nomenclature in
Japanese kana font. The series is a direct replication of the images for
the 2014S1 U.S. release from the same year with a similar layout as the late 1980’s
Bukimi Kun cards using large number font, the removal of the ‘PEEL HERE’ arrow
and the iconic green header—which is no longer curved and previously covered
up the GPK header of yesteryears. ‘Click’ image to view the 2014S1 Bukimi Kun
page.

—
The same Forname occurs only once for this release
due to the reoccuring ADAM Bomb theme for cards 66a ADAM
Bomb
and B3a ADAM Boom. The set also has a few name derivatives, such as
cards 24a BENNY Bag and 26b Ben stalk as well as cards 28a Pained PETE and B2a
PETEY Da Fool.

—
The set contains two cards with the Same Name as
previous GPK characters for card 29a Condo MINNIE that has the same name as OS5
card 576a Condo MINNIE and card 50a Taste BUD has the same name as OS11 card 430a
Taste BUD.

—
GPK Valentines Cards were released by the Topps Company
in February of 2014, as a Topps Online Store release only, right after the New
Year and last year’s holiday Greeting Cards release in November of 2013. Two box
versions are available, an ‘A’ and ‘B’ box with ten greeting cards per box; five
different images with two different names for each box that ran $19.99 each. The
front side is the final artwork image, the backside includes a card image and
nomenclature; ‘First Printing’ is located on the back of the card for a total
of ten different images and twenty backside characters if both boxes were purchased.
Box ‘B’ contains an exclusive image for the GPK Valentine’s Cards release for
cards Stinky STACY and Reeking ROSE painted by Joe Simko and the concept by Colin
Walton.

—
The card backs once again include OS1-like GPK Comics,
called Garbage Pail Comics that originated for the BNS2 release and like The Garbage
Gang title of yesteryears contains the trademark (™) symbol.

—
The twenty-second set to contain cards with the GPK Acronym
found within the artwork. The GPK acronym found on the hockey jersey of
cards 58a BUCK Puck, 58b IKE Hockey & 58c LOWELL
Goal, on the snowboard of cards 59a Hurt CURT, 59b Bailed BART & 59c PAT Splat
and on the bottom of the skiis for cards 64a Frigid BRIDGET, 64b Nordic NESSIE
& 64c Chilly MILLIE.

—
Various GPK Ads used as cover photos found on Facebook for the various releases
during the 2014S1 set that includes the set itself, the 2014S1 Bukimi Kun online
release as well as the Valentine’s Day greeting cards.

—
The following eight GPK artists signed Artist Autograph
Cards
for the new set: Tom Bunk, Brent Engstrom, Dave Gross, Joe Simko,
Layron DeJarnette, Mark Pingitore and JungHwa Im.

—
Artist JungHwa Im completed the GPK Border Artwork
for the backs of the GPK Olym-picks cards.

Several GPK artists worked
on the Sketch cards for this release, standard sketch cards: Tom Bunk, Fred Harper,
Joe Simko, Neil Camera, Layron DeJarnette, Mark Pingitore, Jeff Zapata, John Cebollero,
Strephon Taylor, Steve Potter and Colin Walton. The die-cut sketch cards include
the same artists listed above except Tom Bu
nk.

—
Artist Tom Bunk, the only veteran GPK artist to work
on the new release, completed one card front for the set, but also worked on the
sketch cards for this release including using colors. Sketch card samples by Bunk
can be seen on the ‘Sketch Cards’ page above.

—
Next-gen GPK artist Layron DeJarnette also shows
up for this release completing one final artwork for the ‘Olympics’ subset card, within
the base card set, and participating in sketch cards.

—
Unfortunately, next-generation artist Fred Harper
is back for sketch cards, but wasn’t able to contribute to the base card artwork;
his work would seriously make the GPK sets of late stronger in appearance. Harper
has only contributed to one GPK release thus far, for ANS7.

—
The original production mock-up Display Box for 2014S2
was the color red and used the 2014S1 title and artwork; the color was eventually
changed to blue for the mock-up hobby box and final release of 2014S2.

—
Next-gen GPK artist Mark Pingitore is back for a
fare share of concepts and final artwork for the base card set, art within the
‘Olympics’ subset within the base card set and for a half of the bonus cards for
this release. Below is a ‘see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil’ concept that
was rejected due to another, ‘similar’ concept that made the set instead; Pingitore’s
piece feels stronger and more polished of the two. Also pictured are alternate
versions of the color roughs for cards #47 and #49 within the base set.

—
Wacky Packages and GPK artist David Gross found time
in his busy schedule to complete two paintings for the ‘Olympics’ subset cards.

—
The largest contributor to the 2014S1 set is GPK artist Brent
Engstrom
who completed more than twenty paintings for the recent set. As
seen below, Engstrom starts with a digital ‘pencil rough’ and then adds color.
It is then placed within a GPK template from Topps as a ‘color rough’ which displays
the GPK header, nameplate, ‘PEEL HERE’ arrow and die-cut outline; thus giving
a size comparison and placement. Finally, the final artwork is painted and turned
into Topps. The knight had purple tights for the color rough artwork, but was
changed to green colored tights for the final artwork image.

—
The other main contributor besides Engstrom and Pingitore is GPK artist Joe
Simko
of Wax Eye that released the satirical parody sets Cereal Killers
and Stupid Heroes who completed several base card pieces, bonus cards and ‘Olympics’
subset cards final artwork for the set.

—
Concept artist Steve Potter contributed a handful
of great character ides for the GPK release and also participated in the sketch
card phenomenon. The following, pictured pieces were rejected; the ‘Little Miss-take’
piece is a subject matter that remains unpublished and is a rich for parody. The
pieces were rejected due to similar concepts published elsewhere, Engstrom’s Polaroid
Kid released for the 2014S2 set, and the pinwheel girl being very close to the
rotating Kid that Engstrom also submitted for the following set.

—
The artwork and writing for all of the Comic Backs
was completed by Pat Barrett, except for Nasty NICK/Dead TED and Hippie SKIPPY/GRANT
‘Wishes’ which were written with Colin Walton and ‘The Mystery Fink’ was written
solelyby Colin Walton. Walton completed all of the Olym-picks card backs and medal
backs. The ‘Garbage Pail Comics’ logo. contains the non-registered trademark™
symbol.
