A Historical Garbage Pail Kids Reference Guide

RELEASE
PERIOD : 1986 – 1987

The
Garbage Pail Kids Chewy Candies were manufactured in late 1986 or
early 1987, well after the release of the OS1 and OS2 GPK sets, and also produced
in late 1987, after the trademark lawsuit that resulted in the GPK header change
for both the franchise and candy wrappers. The confectionary product used characters
from the OS1 and OS2 GPK sets as masocts on the candy wrappers. Three assortment
of flavors can be found; cherry with a blue & red wrapper, grape with a yellow
& purple wrapper, and strawberry with a pink & green wrapper. The images
are very similar to the rendered artwork found on the GPK wax wrappers; however,
the NPD (New Product Development) department at Topps in the ’80s was responsible
for the GPK cards, while the Art Department created the GPK packaging and artwork
for licensed products, oftentimes, using in-house art staff or other freelance
artists not directly associated with the Garbage Pail Kids franchise.

Although artist Tom Bunk worked on the character rendering for the OS1 thru OS16
wax wrappers, including the released Chewy Candy ADAM Bomb
image, the remaining artwork was executed by artist George Evans—not verified
—as
stated within various eBay auctions by the Topps Co., aka the Topps Vault.
The color key was most likely completed by in-house artist Mae Jeon, with the
project art directed by Ben Solomon
—head
of the Topps Art Department at the time—with
assistance by Shu Lee and/or Rick Mahig. Five of these B&W rendered artwork
pieces can also be found as pink line artwork on the GPK Cheap Toys checklist,
however, that particular artwork may have been completed by a different freelance
artist and not technically by the same one, except for the Tom Bunk piece. The
product was made and produced in Argentina (South America) by the Stani company
for the Confex, Inc. company, located in New Jersey and licensed by the Topps
company.

FINAL
TIGHT INK ARTWORK BY GEORGE EVANS
NOTE: BUNK ARTWORK USED FOR ADAM BOMB

The
Series 1 release displayed the ADAM Bomb character and the straight GPK header
on the product bag, that’s also located on the individual candy wrappers, and
the ‘Series 2’ release displayed the Brainy JANIE character & the new banner-style
GPK header on the product bag, that’s also located on the individual candy wrappers;
both wrapper releases being printed with
the rarer pink logo but the bag itself having the regular, red GPK logo. There
are sixteen characters found for each release for a total of thirty-two different,
but not unique, characters. Each full bag contains a 240 count of three candy
flavors and random characters for both series. Both releases contain a variation
of 48 wrappers each—16 cherry, 16 grape and 16 strawberry
—for
a total of 96 wrappers.

The Series 2 release contains the following wrapper
codes: cherry with wrapper code ‘COD. 9892’, grape with wrapper code ‘COD. 10353’
and strawberry with wrapper code ‘COD. 10377’. The tight line artwork and xeroxed
color key artwork were auctioned off of eBay for the Chewy Candies project by
the Topps Vault, including quite a few unpublished images that did not appear
within the release; this artwork is usually much cleaner without the color key
values and nomenclature for the printing process. The Chewy Candies artwork should
not be confused with the Imperial Toys rendered artwork releases for their
‘Sunglasses’ and ‘Pencil Case’ products.

NOTE:
MUCH GRATITUDE TOWARD GPK COLLECTOR LUIS THOMPSON FOR HIS CONTINUED SUPPORT, INSPIRATION,

Penny candy stores were still around in the ’80s but you had to hunt them down,
usually found at small mom-and-pop shops that also sold trading cards. Most larger
stores were switching over to bulk confectionery—the method of commercially
dispensing a multitude of small units of candy either within manufactured bags
or a mass amount based on weight—typically seen being sold at kiosks, grocery
stores, convenient stores, and candy stores. Penny candy, like old ‘penny dreadfuls’,
are sold by the piece, and as the name suggests, costs a penny apiece. These loose,
pick ‘n’ mix, one-cent candies were more often found at small neighborhood shops,
five-and-dime stores, or near cash registers as a cheap impulse item.

An
Argentinian corporation founded by the Stanislaysky family. In 1993 the corporation
was acquired by Cadbury Schweppes, PLC (U.K.) which renamed its acquisition Cadbury
Stani S.A.I.C. The Topps and Stani companies, both family owned enterprises, entered
into five written agreements between the years of 1957 & 1985, and renewed
through 1996, including preambles, amendments, and restated license agreements,
whereby Topps shared its formula, processes & techniques, and allowed Stani
exclusive rights to manufacture, sell, and distribute chewing gum under the Topps
brands in parts of South America.

Introduction
by Haight (CSH), Senior District Judge: “This case is a tale of two companies,
once friends and collaborators, now enemies and scorched-earth litigators; and
of chewing gum.”
Topps
filed a lawsuit against Cadbury Stani on August 31, 2006 stating and alleging
that after the 1980 agreement had expired in 1996 that Stani continued to use
Topps chewing gum formulas which gave rise to a breach of contract (dismissed)
and to claim in tort for the wrongful misappropriation of trade secrets (dismissed
except for ‘reverse engineering’). Both parties contended that the contracts were
unambiguous but they were interpreted differently.

Per
his notice of death, John Francis Sullivan, who died on March 19, 2012 at the
age of 87 year old, was at one time the president of Topps Chewing Gum International
and the founder of Confex Inc. Sullivan would have used his experience at Topps
when he founded Confex, made connections with the already established relationship
between Productos Stani and the Topps Chewing Company, and obtained an early license
for the Garbage Pail Kids trademark to sell more ‘shocking’ candy to kids, something
Topps and other companies had done for years. The company created a line-up of
chewy candies after the GPK license that they manufactured with the same design
and flavors—strawberry, grape and cherry
—with
nomenclature for the characters, much like their monster cards of old.

A Wide Selection

”The
name really strikes people,” said John Sullivan, the president of Confex Inc.
of Shrewsbury, N.J., which makes Boogers. The name notwithstanding, the candies
are shaped like little varicolored monsters. For children to eat a candy with
such a name, Mr. Sullivan said, ”is a way of shocking their parents and asserting
their independence.”, ”It’s so exciting when the product and concept come together,”
he went on. ”And with Boogers, we’ve hooked into something culturally significant.”

BITS & BOBS: The rendered
artwork, for the most part, remains the same for the character and the items of
confectionary that he is holding, the candy cane and ice cream cone, but the surrounding
products found on the card image, like the box of candies, lollipop, spilled soda
can and birthday cake have been removed for the simpler wrapper artwork. Instead
of the melted ice cream drops on the character’s leg being brown for the chocolate
ice cream like the card artwork, the drippings have become pink for the strawberry
ice cream for the wrapper artwork.

BITS & BOBS: The
rendered artwork captures the feel of the original source, and although the cracked
ground does appear on the Chewy Candies bag it is missing from the wrapper artwork.
Much like the wax wrappers for the card release, the mushroom cloud has been shaded
a darker color to stand out from the white background and the character’s shoes
have become yellow, but they’re still white on the Chewy Candies bag. The rendered
artwork by artist Tom Bunk was also used for the Cheap Toys checklist artwork,
but the dimples got lost in transition, or printing.

BITS
& BOBS
:
The rendered artwork may
be the most simplistic, colorwise, for the wrapper artwork, containing only a
small amount of green for the garbage bag and blue for the droid body, however,
the fine detail makes up for the lack of color variation. The light silver color
would not work with the white wrapper background, but looks great with the blue
galaxy background of the card worked into the rendering. For the final line artwork
and color key chart, the published images had value codes written on the artwork.

The rendered artwork is
a spitting image in position and posture to the card image, down to the chest
hair. To keep colors to a minimum for the wrapper, the black/darker shoes, white
undergarments and pink mirror have become yellow for the ‘Chewy Candy’ artwork.
Extremely interesting to have a cross-dresser on a candy wrapper intended for
the sale to children. Of course, the vanity table, chair, mirror, extra pair of
shoes and closet full of additional, gaudy outfits seen within the card artwork
have been removed for the wrapper artwork.

BITS

: The rendered artwork is a great representation of the larger-than-life

weight scale and candy box have been changed to the color yellow from the color
white so it wasn’t lost within the white background of the wrapper artwork. The
ice cream cone flavor and drippings on the body have become red for the exact
same reasoning. Much like the ADAM Bomb character and rendered artwork, the cracked

BITS & BOBS:
The rendered artwork colors
for the brainiac of OS1 are pretty spot-on except for the hair is colored yellow
to make it pop-out a bit more and the bow and computer changed to red and the
keyboard to green. The female character was not only one of the lucky few printed
in both releases, but is also the bag mascot for Series 2. The chalkboard has
been left out of the wrapper artwork, that further hinted at her Einstein smarts.
The text on the computer is also shorter on the wrapper artwork and did not transfer
completely over to the

TIGHT
LINE ARTWORK
&
COLOR KEY
: The Chewy Candy artwork is one of the few artwork pieces also
found on the Cheap Toys candy checklist. The detail for the wrapper artwork is
is pretty insane compared to Pound’s final artwork. The color values are as follows:
bow + computer = solid yellow and red (brick orange-like color), keyboard + test
tube = solid yellow and blue (green color), labcoat = solid blue, computer screen

BITS & BOBS:
The rendered artwork for the skinny minny
character is the same bone-for-bone except the neck vertebrae is thicker and less
detail in the pelvic region. The bright white diaper color has been changed to
yellow to offset the white background of the wrapper, and for similar reasons
the bone white skeleton color has been changed to a dead-blue color to pop-out
on the wrapper. A bit different than the Imperial ‘pencil case’ skeleton,
by
a different artist
, on a blue background
that has been changed to the color grey. Also seen on the Cheap Toys checklist,
where the yarn-hair detail was never added.

fur on the one boot becomes yellow and the yellow leopard print becomes an orange
color for the wrapper artwork. The detail for this character is quite impeccable,
even showing the small scars on the skin, including weapon and belt detail. The

BITS & BOBS:
The rendered artwork for the silly putty-esque character image and color is almost
idential to the final card artwork, except the white diaper has been changed to
pink for the wrapper artwork due to the white background. The teeth for the character
are a bit more lost on the wrapper artwork. This is also identifiable within the
later

into the Series 1 toy release. It is unknown if the same artist also completed
the one OS3 image for the checklist along with the Series 2 Canadian-only release.

boat and beach have been removed compared to the final card artwork; looks to
be doing stretches while exercising, some toe touches. The white diaper has been
changed to green so it’s not lost with the white wrapper background, the sandy
brown hair has been changed to a solid redish-orange color, and the reddish-brown
eye of the card image has been changed to a bright blue color instead.

The pigtail bows have also lost the white and blue color like the dress. Lastly,
the white shoes have become yellow due to the white background of the wrapper.

leopard pattern is greatly reduced considering the smaller scale, so the pattern

blade have been changed to the color blue. The black leather jacket is now rain-coat
yellow along with most of the All-Star-esque shoes. The T-shirt has become fire-red
along with the switchblade handle, and a blue tint added to the hair.

GEORGE Evans Wrapper Artwork
+ JOHN Pound OS1 Card Artwork

BITS & BOBS:
The rendered artwork for the bloodsucker
and Barbie parody victim stay pretty true to their nature. The vampire suit remains
black, and along with the dolls solid dark purple dress, the character is somewhat
lost; the dress should have been a light violet purple. The infamous GPK bat has
been removed, along with the single star and the crescent moon. Even with the
smaller medium, Dracula keeps his necklace and the Ken-cheater retains her spectacles.
The vimpire teethmark bite and dripping blood did not transfer over very well,
however, but this is very minor in the (smaller) scope of things.

TIGHT
LINE ARTWORK
&
COLOR KEY
:
The
wrapper artwork color key appears to have been doubled for the second release,
allowing a lot more colors. The color values include a light purple, almost violet,
solid dress for the doll figure that is unfortunately printed with a dark purple,
a darker skin-tone than normal for the Beach Barbie doll, yellow for the untextured
hair, the underlining of the vampire’s cape remains red, but the character is
given blue highlights for the outer cape and hairline.

GEORGE Evans Wrapper Artwork
+ JOHN Pound OS1 Card Artwork

BITS & BOBS:
The rendered artwork for the drunken businessman
is slightly downplayed, missing the blue bunny, green snake and the top section
of the lamppost. The image remains reversed to match the printed card image with
the baby bottle reading ‘LO TOR TUG’ instead of ‘OL ROT GUT’, later corrected
for the Abram’s GPK book release and for reprinted card images. Unlike most wrapper
images, the white business shirt remains white but the white baby bottle has been
changed to a solid color. A great candy character and role model for children!

TIGHT
LINE ARTWORK
&
COLOR KEY
:
This
particular wrapper artwork may contain one of the most color combinations when
compared to the other wrappers. The color values as previous final color key artwork
contains: skin tone is pinker/redder, bottle = 50% yellow and 50% red (brick reddish
color), along with pink for the elephant, red for the tie, yellow for the beer
vomit, brown for the hat, blue for the symbols and water drain hole rim.

GEORGE Evans Wrapper Artwork

BITS & BOBS:
The rendered artwork for the spaced-out view-master
character looks strangely different considering the, mainly brown, television
sets have been changed to a ‘unnatural’ blue color. Plus, two unfinished TV sets
remain on either side of the character leaving a ‘floating’ screen as seen within
the wrapper, tight line artwork and the xeroxed color rough key. Small detail
like the character’s TV antenna and the smiling watch remain intact. Three additional
television sets and a camcorder have been removed from the background of the character
so he is no longer surrounded, and the face on the screens has been removed.

TIGHT
LINE ARTWORK
&
COLOR KEY
:
This
particular wrapper artwork may contain the least amount of colors for any wrapper
for the release; consisting of the skin-tone color, the dark blue for the character’s
overalls and shoe stripes, light blue for the front of the television sets and
brown for the back fo the television sets. It’s suprising they did not use read
for the swirling, dazed eyes.Of course, the faux brown woodgrain texture has been
removed from the television sets.

BITS & BOBS:
The rendered artwork may be the most simplistic,
colorwise, for the wrapper artwork, containing only a small amount of green for
the garbage bag and blue for the droid body, however, the fine detail makes up
for the lack of color variation. The light silver color would not work with the
white wrapper background, but looks great with the blue galaxy background of the
card worked into the rendering. For the final line artwork and color chart, the
published images had value codes written on the artwork.

BITS & BOBS:
The rendered artwork for the cauldron stirring
witchypoo may be one of the most colorful of the Series 2 wrappers. The light
green vapors within the color key rough became dark green for the final wrapper
artwork and the light blue skull, previously bone-colored, became a dark blue
for the wrapper … whereas the dark blue clothing and bat became almost a dark
black color washing them out; surprisingly, the GPK bat makes an appearance but
is missing in the ‘Evil EDDIE’ wrapper. Unfortunately, the floating eye(ball)-of-newt
also got lost within the wrapper artwork along with the chicken foot.

TIGHT

BITS & BOBS:
The rendered artwork colors for the brainiac
of OS1 are pretty spot-on except for the hair colored yellow to make it pop-out
a bit more and the bow and computer changed to red and the keyboard to green.
The chalkboard has been left out of the wrapper artwork. The text on the computer
is also shorter on the wrapper artwork and did not transfer completely over to
the Cheap Toys checklist artwork. The character is perhaps one of the only female
mascot characters used for main packaging.

A bit different than the Imperial ‘pencil case’ skeleton,
by
a different artist

that has been changed to the color grey. Also seen on the Cheap Toys checklist,
where the yarn-hair detail was never added.

BITS & BOBS:
The rendered artwork for the street anarchist has the word ‘SMUT’ and other partial
word removed from the wall and the third spray can is completely missing from
the image. The spray cans have become a solid green color and the character’s
hair more of a brown. As seen in the Cheap Toys checklist, the same artwork was
used but the pose of the actual toy figure is quite different and most of the
pink spray paint has been removed. Also, the word ‘Graffiti’ is misspelled ‘Grafitti’
on the checklist, but is spelled correctly on the Chewy Candies wrapper.

The rendered artwork for the charging barbarian
changed the silver grey steel color to a blue color for the wrapper artwork, the
fur on the one boot becomes yellow and the yellow leopard print becomes an orange
color for the wrapper artwork. The detail for this character is quite impeccable,
even showing the small scars on the skin, including weapon and belt detail. The

BITS & BOBS:
The rendered artwork for
the brachiating ape, like the other wrappers in the release, is a spitting, or
drooling image of the final artwork and card image. Only half of the branch is
used for the wrapper artwork and the character’s head is positioned closer to
this limb than what’s found on the original artwork. The hair bow color is rather
lost within the wrapper image, but the new, blue baby bottle color does stick
out much better. The whole banana, peel and fruit, itself is a solid yellow color
that pokes and pops out nicely on the white background of the wrapper.

BITS & BOBS:
The rendered artwork for the rocking-out
old folker changes slighlty, the character is given a long sleeve shirt instead
of the short sleeves as found on the card image. The ‘I WANNA ROCK’ logo is in
black text and there are far less old age wrinkles that can be found on the character
due to the smaller wrapper artwork format. The patch on the knee is printed in
a dark blue rather than purple and the grey cane, to help push since the doll-legs
do not reach the ground, is found in the same yellow color as the rocking chair.

TIGHT

&
COLOR KEY
:
The
wrapper artwork color key appears to have been doubled for the second release,

BITS & BOBS:
The rendered artwork for the undead character
is practically the same, wrappings and all. The gold sarcophagus has been changed
to an dark red-orange for the wrapper artwork with similar blue stripes. The sun-baked
brown skin has been changed to a dead-grey color. Considering the character is
mostly surrounded by the sarcophagus, the wrappings could remain white without
being affected by the white wrapper background. Althought the desert background
is absent, the small evil eye symbol is still intact.

TIGHT

&
COLOR KEY
: The wrapper artwork color key appears to have been doubled for
the second release, allowing a lot more colors. The color values include a dark
orange-red for the sarcophagus and a lighter orange-red for the rim; questioned
as ‘light orange’ on the final artwork. The skin-tone has become a dead-grey color,
instead of dried-leather skin color, and the eyelids brown—which really can’t
be made out on the wrapper; if it was even chosen for the final color key for
the artwork.

BITS & BOBS:
The rendered artwork for the anthropomorphic
lizard person remains a nice solid green color and really pops out on the wrapper.
Unfortunately, there are two colors that were either removed or accidentally not
included for the red forked tongue and the brown table; most likely an accident
since the now white table is totally lost within the white background of the wrapper.
The white diaper has also been strangely colored green along with the reptile.
The least effective transfer from color rough to wrapper artwork.

TIGHT

COLOR KEY
:
The
wrapper artwork color key appears to have been doubled for the second release,
allowing a lot more colors. The color values include the green skin tone (solid
yellow + 60% blue), the bib that remains yellow, light blue for the silverware
(knife and fork) and fly wings, dark blue for the housefly body, red for the forked
tongue and a dark brown for the table setting for one. Sadly, the red and brown
colors were not transfered correctly over for the wrapper production leaving the

BITS & BOBS:
The rendered artwork detail
for the body builder character has a few subtle changes compared to the final
card artwork. The weight bar looks to be slightly more curved and colored blue
instead of gold and the character’s muscle definition isn’t as defined as the
card artwork, leaving out some leg and arm lines and the stomach muscle curvatore
line, but otherwise most of the color remains the same. The line artwork can also

GEORGE Evans Wrapper Artwork + JOHN Pound OS2 Card Artwork

BITS
& BOBS
: The rendered artwork for the caveman character is extremely
detailed compared to the final card artwork. The body hair is only slightly reduced
along the chest area, the treasure path becoming more like a treasure trail. The
leopard pattern is greatly reduced considering the smaller scale, so the pattern
appears larger on the wrapper artwork. Much like the animal print of OS1, the
color has changed from yellow to a brick-reddish color (intended to be orange)
for the wrapper artwork along with the club, changing from brown. The characters
face, not the head, is turned slightly to the right.

TIGHT
LINE ARTWORK
&
COLOR KEY
: The
attention to detail for the wrapper artwork is excellent, Topps demands a good
represention and translation for their licensed product. The color values are
as follows: skin tone = 15% yellow and 15% red, club = 50% yellow and 50% red
(brick reddish color) and the clothing = solid yellow + 50% red for the orange
color. The club has been removed from the cavewoman/victim and the color scheme
remains relatively the same for both prehistoric characters.

GEORGE Evans Wrapper Artwork
+ JOHN Pound OS2 Card Artwork

BITS & BOBS:
The rendered artwork for
the pirate character, colorwise, is quite different due to the source material
of the wrapper and it’s limited amount of color. The breeches, hankerchief, ruffles
and hat stayed the same colors and the brick-red of the hooked hand, pegleg and
knife changed from brown. Minus the parot’s head plumage, the rest of the bird
remained the same color. The major changed was the pirate shirt and cross bones
& skull both becoming yellow, the one boot and sword becoming blue, and the
beard stubble becoming a fully-fledged brick-red beard.

Of
the thirty-two Series 1 and Series 2 Chewy Candies wrapper mascots printed, twenty-one
from the OS1 set and eleven from the OS2 set, twenty-five of the character artwork
pieces are unique images, seventeen from OS1 and eight from OS2, which includes
character twin nomenclature. However, there were several unpublished OS1 images
auctioned off on eBay, via the Topps Vault, that never made it past the tight
line and color rough key phase.

PUBLISHED
SAMPLE

Whether
due to the topic or nature, these images were passed over by the Topps Art Department
and the sheet that the trading card and artwork were taped down to remain clean,
without any color key values, nomenclature, et cetera. If the artwork did not
enter into post-production the color values and nomenclature was not identified.
This section covers any unpublished artwork images; it’s interesting to note that

BITS & BOBS: For
the unreleased image, the entire surrounding electrical shock flash has been removed,
but the two lonely electric bolts can be found elsewhere on the newly rendered

zombified look with an entire brown deteriorating outfit and pale blue skin and
bones. The grey tombstone has been colored green along with the one eyeball iris.
The buzzing fly is missing from the rendered artwork along with the extra pile

instead of stuffed with white cotton and the truncated door is now solid blue
for the rendered artwork. The dirty dishwater blond hair is now a brilliant yellow

BITS & BOBS: For
the unreleased image, the slightly donut-shaped mushroom cloud would have been
a vibrant orange and red color instead of blue, the tie would have contained stripes
as the card artwork and the detonator (red color) and shoes (yellow color) could
always be colored in at a later date much like the yellow shoes of the Chewy Candy

The
ADAM Bomb character is the only artwork for the Chewy Candies release rendered

BITS & BOBS: For
the unreleased image, the discarded and bugged infested doll doesn’t have his
head split open at the top with bugs crawling out, more like a forehead buttchin.
Although the image does contain the jumping bed bugs, the jumping movement lines
are missing. The spiderweb is still intact but greatly reduced and lowered, not

BITS & BOBS: For
the unreleased image, the straightjacket, seemingly, would have remained white,
unlike most rendered artwork where most white objects are changed due to the nature
of the white background of the candy wrapper. The pink padded walls and floor
are of course missing and the blue pajamas have become green with red stars; most
likely would’ve been printed too dark and difficult to see the detail.

BITS & BOBS: For
the unreleased image, the pimple-popping, pus-infused character the skin tone
wouldn’ve remained relatively the same and the purple shorts and suspenders as
well, making it one of the easiest color transitions. The acne lotion was changed
to a blue bottle from the color green and the bandaid switched to a white color.
Strangely,
it is unknown if the same artist took over for the color mock-up, but the artwork
is entirely different: the popped zit was reduced in size, the gyser is spurting
rather than ooze gushing, the fingers are completey re-positioned, the bandaid
moved, the mouth is off-center, and the ‘ZIT GOO’ cap is missing. The color rough
key image would’ve been printed and is obviously not a xeroxed copy but new tight
line artwork.

CHEAP
TOYS CHECKLIST ARTWORK
: Although the ACME ACNE-like character remained
unreleased within the Chewy Candy realm, the original tight line artwork was used
later used for the Cheap Toys checklist for character #7 Crater CHRIS. The Cheap

BITS & BOBS: For
the unreleased image, the self-recycling refuse container character that doesn’t
refuse trash of any type is a nice colorful artwork rendering. Most of the dark
green and brown splotches have become more yellow to green in color. The fish
head changed to green, the eyes to blue and the grey trash can to a light blue.

BITS & BOBS: For
the unreleased image, the roadkill character may be the most straightforward rendition
from card image to wrapper color, down to the pink gum and pink stripes on the
CPK-esque shoes. The steamroller has been cropped down to basically just the large
back roller ‘wheel’ and the street contains two line dashes rather than three.

BITS & BOBS: For
the unreleased image, the character and coloring as a whole is pretty solid. The
ice pick is missing from the image, but also the character’s right pigtail and
pink bow which is now covered by ice, as well as part of the character’s right
leg that should be colored purple and not blue (for the ice); making the legs
look awkward. You’re not able to see the character’s left arm through the ice
either.

BITS & BOBS: For
the unreleased image, the color for the character’s dress was drastically changed
for the rendered artwork and color key mock-up to the color blue so it would ‘pop’
off the wrapper better. The red hair and green eyes remain the same, but the cold
hard grey slab holding the guillotine and head basket has been turned and colored
into wood. The detail to the woodgrain and basking weave is very impressive, and
possibly too detailed for a candy wrapper.
