Garbage Pail Kids Original Series 2 Reverse Art Gallery

Art director
Mark Newgarden, from the NPD (New Product Development) Department, created the
card-type for the OS2 Garbage Pail kids card backs and the ribbon artwork
along with artist Tom Bunk who created the reverse card artwork — the same duo
that worked on the OS1 card backs. Due to the introduction of completed puzzles
to the GPK franchise the amount of reverse card artwork is greatly reduced
and the OS2 set contains quite a few duplicate images, as well. The same artwork
can also be found within the 2014 Chrome OS2 release, although in a different
order and without the duplicate backs. Eighteen known backs were completed for
the OS2 set with three previously unpublished pieces recreated for the OS2 Chrome
release.

The
NPD Department would create the revised artwork and card type, but the Art Department
was in charge of the overall design and would produce the composition of the front
side and card backs as well as the promotional material and packaging. Comp images
were generated to help guide the final card type design and artwork placement.
The mock-up for ‘Short Memory Award’ contains the card type, verbatim, plus the
final and ribbon artwork images by Tom Bunk and Mark Newgarden, respectively.
The card type would eventually become red and the ‘Signatures‘ line would
eventually have the correct concept inscription. For some reason, the fabricated
copyright line has the year 1986 instead of 1985. The NPD Department would give
feedback at a later stage and eventually give the final ‘okay’.

— It
is unknown why the unpublished OS2 reverse card artwork and card-type were removed
from the set, especially considering there are quite a few duplicate card backs.
Two of these card backs eventually were sold via eBay where the final artwork
could be seen. A restored card back was created for the 2014 OS2 Chrome set under
the direction of art director Colin Walton. Topps had Bunk send them images for
his original color finals finished with marker to use for these backsides. The
title under the signature could not be fully made out so was rewritten. Also,
the line “… all in the matter of good clean fun.“, should read
“… all in the name of good clean fun.“
