Pictured below are artist Tom Bunk’s unpublished Display
Box artwork that was created for the OS9 set and also tested for the OS10
set. The artwork was completed before the new model sheets came into affect but
was pulled from either GPK release. The OS9 box characters still have the Cabbage
Patch Kids look depicted in a very violent last scenario in response to the lawsuit
outcome. The OS10 design was eventually changed slightly due to the new artwork
guidelines; oval eyes, three fingers, et cetera. The cards later released in the
UK and internationally post lawsuit were translated from The Garbage Gang title;
the new logo can be found on the backs of the OS9 cards and the dealer ad poster.
Below are two different sketch designs, one with the Cabbage Patch Kids’ head
being chopped off with two OS10 box artwork color concepts and the other without
the CPK head being scissored along with the final artwork.

The unpublished Poster sketch artwork and
poster layout from 1987 as sold on eBay via The Topps Vault. The final artwork
pictured above would have been used for the poster and packaging for the OS9 Series
GPK release. The OS9 set may have introduced the new The Garbage Gang title
in case the Garbage Pail Kids logo could no longer be used after the lawsuit;
the OS8 and OS9 sets were in production prior to the lawsuit coming to a close
during the OS7 release.

In the summer of 1987, the Garbage Pail Kids Movie
was released to extremely poor reviews. Shot on a small budget, a union strike
mid-production, and with a poor story line the movie was set to bomb prior to
it eventually becoming a cult classic. The GPK characters themselves, seven in
all, were very odd looking; due to the lawsuit, the characters could not have
a CPK-like appearance. The international name for the movie was The Garbage Gang
as seen on the collector’s magazine pictured below. A VHS format was released
for consumer home viewing along with the competing Betamax version (unsure if
it made it on Laserdisc). The MGM movie was released on DVD for the first time
in the Fall of 2005, and re-packaged for a Canadian release in the Fall of 2012.
In December of 2015, the Shout Factory released the movie in hi-definition on
Blu-ray format containing newly created key artwork by Nathan Thomas Milliner
with a reversible cover containing the original VHS and theatrical poster key
art painted by Craig Nelson — who also painted movie portraits for The Monster
Squad, Homeward Bound, Slapshot, Police Academy 4, et cerera.

Atlantic Releasing Corporation printed off ‘special collectors edition’ Movie
Postcards that measure 4 x 6 during the Garbage Pail Kids and The Garbage
Gang movie release; a character card was most likely printed for each of the seven
characters in the movie, but four of them for sure: NAT Nerd, VALERIE Vomit, Foul
PHIL, ALI Gator, Greaser GREG, MESSY Tessie and Windy WINSTON. Paramount Pictures
also sent out a GPK Movie flyer promoting sales for the beta and VHS versions
of the movie for rentals with the backside giving a breakdown of ‘selling tips’
and ‘in-store promotional ideas’ for displays and giveaways; click the movie sheet

Artist and writer Jay Lynch completed the gags for
the ‘Would We Lie To You?’ card back comics finishing the color roughs as well
as the final artwork. Gary Whitney assisted Lynch with inking and lettering on
the card backs. Lynch also submitted gag roughs for the card fronts.

Pictured below are two of artist Tom Bunk‘s early
GPK color roughs that were finished in 1987 with the character for cards 347a
Dam DAN and 347b MIKE Dike sporting a different, traditional female Dutch outfit
and the character for cards 352a HERMAN Hormone and 352b Turned-On RON posing
in a different position with the dirty magazine reading ‘Play Trash’ instead of
‘Playtoy’ — a name parody of ‘Playboy’.

The following two Reworked GPK were completed in
1987 by Tom Bunk and are early idea color roughs for cards 359a Kerosene KERRY
and 359b Blazin’ BLAKE where the burnt edges were removed for the final image
and cards 373a DESI Island and 373b Marooned MAUREEN taken over and painted by
James Warhola where the palm tree was removed, paper added to the floor, pictures
added to the cistern lid and the tile color changed.

Artist Tom Bunk had drastically different Color Rough
artwork renditions for several of his OS9 GPK characters. The character for cards
341a Juicy BRUCE and 341b Fruity RUDY was a lemon instead of an orange being pressed
by a woman’s hand and the background and tabletop color combinations were completely
changed. The character for cards 349a Polluted PERCY and 349b Barnacle BILL stayed
relatively the same but sporting a nautical outfit, more dead fish were added
to the fishbowl and the background color changed for the final artwork.

The John Pound color rough for cards 375a Trap DORA
and 375b Rear View MYRA eventually was picked as one of the OS9 GPK puzzles, as
seen in the uncut sheet further below. Since very few un-revised artwork pieces
by Pound original thumbnail sketches are available to the public there are very
few changes, if any, that can be found between the tight pencil, color rough and
final artwork since they are photocopied and colored and painted over.

Artist James Warhola completed the first final artwork
piece for cards 346a Peeled PAUL and 346b Skin LES prior to the art director at
Topps having John Pound paint a different, alternate version for the printed card.

The character for cards 356a Momma MIA and 356b Electric SHARI also had ‘MICHELLE
Shocked’ as potential GPK Nomenclature. The name
comes from the music singer of the same name who became popular in the late 1980’s.

GPK Flowcharts were created for the later
Garbage Pail Kids sets which showed the art director how the progress of the new
set was going. It displayed what each artist was working on, which concept piece
and the stage in which the painting had been completed. Oftentimes, concept pieces
were denied and the department tried to work them into later sets. A list of additional
concept pieces was found at the bottom of the flowchart in case pieces could not
be used. The OS9 set contained the following gags which either replaced denied
concept pieces within the series, were saved for a later sets or never saw the
light of day: rolling dough (OS9), hot air balloons (OS9), piggy bank, hanging
on coat hook (OS9), fat girl with girdle – eyes and zits popping (OS10), shark
out of sink biting hand with toothpaste, generic Eric – UPC (TCT), filmstrip,
manequin, lightbulb (OS15), middle finger (unpublished), kid in jar (unpublished),
butterfly pinned (OS14), VC Artie – VCR (OS15).
