licenses include USAopoly, for a branded Monopoly; Abrams, for a middle-school
book series; ChalkLine, Surreal Entertainment, Just Funky, and more. Existing
licensees with new introductions include Geeki Tikis, Super 7, Ripple Junction,
Mondo, FYE Consumables, Creepy Co., Fright Rags, and more. To support the increased
licensed product stream and Topps’ expanded Garbage Pail Kids publishing
program, the company plans a number of new marketing initiatives.

Garbage
Pail Kids characters will be making their first appearances at trade shows and
comic conventions, with fan-oriented, 35th anniversary programming showcasing

produced the audiobook and CDs for the release which falls under Blackstone Publishing
company, one of the largest independent audiobooks publishers in the United States.

Pre-orders for book one were
so overwhelming that a concurrent second print run occurred. At release, both
a first
print run (10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1) and a second print run (10 9 8 7
6 5 4 3 2) of the book can be found. Several virtual interviews were held with
the auther, R.L. Stine, and signed copies of the book could be acquired with bookplates
from B.A.M., Mysterious Galaxy B., and other bookstores across the nation. Barnes
& Noble had a ‘signed book’ pre-order but most orders were cancelled due to
lack of fulfillment.

Abrams
Children’s Books has announced the future publication of “Garbage Pail
Kids #1: Welcome to Smellville,” the first book in a middle-grade series
inspired by the Garbage Pail Kids. The deal for three books, including world rights,
was negotiated by Charles Kochman, editorial director, Abrams, and Ira Friedman,
vice president, global licensing, Topps. Kochman will also edit the books.
R.L.
Stine, author of the “Goosebumps” and “Fear Street” series,
has signed on to author the book. The series will feature cover art by Joe Simko
and interior illustrations by Jeff Zapata, both mainstay artists for the GPK brand
for Topps. Each book in the series will be packaged with four exclusive sticker
cards.
“The Garbage Pail Kids are ghastly, loud, messy, out of control…
out of their minds,” says Stine. “In other words, my kind of kids. I’m
hoping to create a book series that captures all the loopy slapstick fun of these
uniquely awful characters, to get all middle-grade kids reading – and laughing.”

+ gross-out bits, and a green splatter notice that the book ‘INCLUDES
4 BONUS STICKERS!‘ Little Golden Books®, a part of Peguin Random House,
contacted ABRAMS Books, after the original image release in February 2020, stating
the yellow + purple spine cover was too close in appearance to their ‘A Little
Golden Book’ series with the distinctive gold + black spine cover, containing
random images of flowers, animals and insects line artwork.

legendary author behind Goosebumps and Fear Street will next publish a middle-grade
series based on The Topps Company’s pop-culture phenomenon Garbage Pail Kids,
EW can announce exclusively. The author reached a three-book deal with publisher
Abrams’ Children’s Books, beginning with Welcome to Smellville, which
will hit shelves this fall.
Garbage Pail Kids first launched in 1985 as collectible
sticker cards and has since grown to include merchandise such as T-shirts, toys,
mobile and board games, and more. In Stine’s vision, the Garbage Pail Kids
are gross and weird and strange, but they’re not bad kids — they just

The Abrams ‘FALL
2020‘ catalogue showcased a mock up of the upcoming youth novel release
with ‘Includes 4 exclusive stickers1’ peaking out from the book innards as well
as two illustrations by artist Jeff Zapata. Although Jeff’s artwork was still
in a rough artwork stage, Abrams liked it so much they used it early for the catalogue
spread. The write-up contained the same information found within the product description
of the book as well as touching upon ‘cross-generational appeal’, ‘popular brand’

flavor of Bony Tony’s Skull Crunch was supposed to be blue crispies only with
white marshmallows; blueberry flavor. I came up with the flavors and character
choices. Bony Tony’s box design was all finished and painted, but last minute
FYE mentioned they no longer had the blue crispies anymore!” The flavor was
eventually changed to basically neapolitan with the three distinct flavors of

GPK sunshade was announced the week of the San Diego Comic-Con@Home event and
posted to the FYE website on July 22, 2020 as a pre-order item for the month of
September. The availability date was changed to August 30, 2020, but collectors
started to receive the GPK sunshade mid-August. The car shade was not technically
or officially tied to SDCC as much as FYE was looking to leverage the Comic Con
‘halo’, the hype surrounding the event.

Although the product
is exclusive to FYE, the sunshade was actually produced by Surreal Entertainment

Two versions of the ‘GL’ employee exclusive were created for the GPK taxi cab
by artist JOE Simko. The Unaware AARON concept chosen is an OS1 tribute to artist
JOHN Pound’s character for cards 31a Run Down RHODA + 31b Flat PAT. The original
phone screen read ‘911 CALL’ but was changed for the final artwork.

The second concept of the ‘GL’ employee, Aaron (GL
team member Aaron Berkey, Sales Director), not chosen,
shows the same character puking out the side of the GPK taxi cab, while the taxi
driver raises a fist out another window and a pigeon having the poo scared out
of it. The ‘Unfare AARON’ nomenclature was also not chosen and is a combination
of the two words ‘unfair’ and taxi cab ‘fare’.

The second San Diego Comic Convention reveal was another enamel pin featuring
the GPK 35th anniversary design, created by noted graphic designer Hydro74. The
commemorative pin measures 1.75”x 1.25.”, is licensed by Topps, produced
by Just Funky, and will be marketed by Toynk Toys. Due to COVID-19, SDCC 2020
was cancelled, however there were four different GPK licensed items released as
show exclusives during the Con’s virtual ComicCon@Home event starting Wednesday,

FLASHBACK — MARS ATTACKS: OCCUPATION

The ‘Mars Attacks Occupation’ Kickstarter GPK and WP ‘ADD-ON’ Ad

The
campaign ran from 05/05/2015 – 06/01/2015 : To be printed and released by December
of 2015. Due to printing issues, the promo card was released in April of 2016.
Artist Joe Simko’s promo card artwork, a tribute to John Pound’s OS4 Alien IAN
character, is a parody of the original Mars Attacks card #21 ‘PRIZE CAPTIVE’ by
Norm Saunders. The Mars Attacks GPK promo card back shows a comic excerpt from
the IDW GPK Gross Encounters comic and te ‘Comic-Book Puke-tacular’ collected

SideKick Lab
published their ‘PROGRESS REPORT’ update #37 via Kickstarter on July 13, 2020
online and through email blast. The last announcement within the update stated
“And finally…. The first in the GPK mashup series by Jason Crosby! This
6-card set will see GPK characters invade the Mars Attacks universe, as Alien
Ian conquers the Earth, vaporizes innocent humans, and makes some unexpected new
friends.” Per social media, artist Jason Crosby stated: “Howdy gang.
I’m excited to show off card #1 in the 6-card Mars Attacks/GPK mashup set (part
of the ‘Mars Attacks: Uprising’ Kickstarter). It’s a mix of gouache, acrylics
and ink (with a touch of snot and ooze for highlights).”

Due
to the COVID virus, the 2020 San Diego Comic Convention was cancelled in-person,
but a Comic Con @ Home event still took place virtually between the dates of July
22nd through the 26th, 2020 with online events and programs. Exclusive convention
merchandise was also available during this time period. Atomic Toybox partnered
with SideKick Lab with two enamel pins and a promo card to coincide with the upcoming
Mars Attacks: Occupation Kickstarter release and a GPK x Mars Attacks mash-up
‘hot pack’ that was available as an add-on once pledging. The pins sold out in
20 minutes on July 22, from 11am CT to approximately 11:20 CT.

July 23, 2020 SideKick Lab published an ‘Email Notification Sign-Up’ page with
the URL ‘www.sidekicklab.com/GPK/’ which stated: “GPK crossover with Mars
Attacks Uprising! Enter your email address below to be sent a private link to
order the all-new GPK ATTACKS wax pack when they become available on July 28th.
This exclusive pack will include six all new story cards, with old and new GPK
characters, illustrated by Jason Crosby!” The URL could be found on the backside
of the SDCC ‘P’ “GPK ATTACKS!” promo card. Besides the Kickstarter campaign,
this was an alternate way for collectors to obtain the add-on hot packs by being
late backers. An additional add-on was added during this promotion while the surveys

On December
7, 2020, Sidekick Lab sent out the latest progress report update and simply stated,
“Here is the design for the GPK mock bubble gum stick:” which will be
included with each GPK x Mars Attacks crossover wax pack.

Louis Gregory, aka ‘Uncle Louie’, in cahoots with Adam F. Goldberg,
posted a sneak peek of the ‘challenge coin’ to social media on July 21, 2020;
stating: “Officially Licensed Topps 35th Anniversary Garbage Pail Kids coins…should
Adam F. Goldberg release them now or wait a few months?” The coin went up
for sale the same day on a very small scale production. Three coins are planned
in total for the set. The first coin limited to 100 sold out in four minutes and
the five proofs that were posted later also sold out in a flash as well; Official
Topps Licensed Garbage Pail Kids Challenge Coin #1 ARTIST PROOF. Price $199.99;
$99.99 Sale. This artwork by Brian Reedy can also by found on Mishka NYC apparel

August 4, 2020 Leo Challange Coins posted the launch allert with price tag for
the gold-plated versions of the challenge coins prevously posted for sale stating:
“This week’s coin release from GPKnation.com is for 24KT Gold plated
versions of the initial 3 coin set. These are coins 1, 2, and 3, plated with 24KT
Gold. There are 35 of each
coin available and they are $99.99/ea. The
sale begins this Friday, August 7th, at 1PM EST. This will be the last release
until the next 5-coin set is ready. Purchase
limit is 1 of each.” Louis mentioned to watch out for an update from Adam

On Tuesday, August 4, Adam posted: “We have now dropped all 3 woodcut
style coins in our first set of official GARBAGE PAIL KIDS COLLECTORS COINS. The
recent Trashy Treasure figures inspired me to produce something next level (or
as Louis calls it “reckless”). I made super limited-edition 24k gold
plated coins. I saw posts discussing how gold has skyrocketed and they will cost
hundreds of dollars. While it’s true gold has gone through the roof during the
pandemic, we still did everything we could to keep the price under a hundred dollars
(hence the super limited number). So! This Friday at 1pm EST, we are releasing
all 3 coins 24k gold coins at once. They will be $99 each. There is only 35 of
each coin to celebrate the 35th anniversary. Each coin has a 1 person limit on
it to avoid someone buying all at once! If by some miracle these actually sell
out, I will consider making more 24K with the next series of coins. Moving forward,

Per
social media, on March 6, 2022, artists Joe Simko posted the original Monopoly
packaging concepts and stated, “Here’s a couple alternate sketch designs
I did for the GPK Monopoly box that came out in 2020. Third pic was the one ultimately
chosen.” The artwork was completed in 2019 by Simko, but images were not
previously shared by the artist online. At one point, there were talks of a potential
variant box cover, which was never realized by The OP, and the possibility that
the artwork could be chosen as a future jigsaw puzzle.

with Bad Crypto and Infomedia Inc., through their WAX Blockchain license, to release
a GPK x Blockchain Heroes (‘BCH’ or ‘BH’) promo card. The P1 Atomic ADAM card,
painted by GPK artist BRENT Engstrom, was dropped on Wednesday night, August 5,
2020. Each WAX cloud wallet account holder received the exclusive digital card
plus a parallel version of the image to chase; viewable via Atomic Assets only.

Artist
BRENT Engstrom also created a piece for Jake “the Snake” Roberts (Aurelian
Smith Jr.), comically wrestling and being attacked by his pet python snake Damien,
along with a ‘split’-personality piece of Hulk Hogan (Terry Gene Bollea), displaying
his 80’s Hulkamania side and his 90’s nWo persona. In April 2020, Hulk Hogan caused
some controversy by suggesting the world may not need a vaccination for coronavirus
and claiming the pandemic is an act of God (… I can’t argue we need a good dieback
for this poor planet!), along with racist comments in May 2020which may have hurt
any potential release (at least of this particular character).
