Madballs™ brand, and The Topps Company, owner of the renowned-yet-subversive
Garbage Pail Kids® brand (“GPK”), have teamed up for a collaboration
that playfully pits classic 1980s icons and “co-heavyweights of gross”
against one another. The collaboration will feature all-new 1980s inspired artwork
from veteran Madballs and GPK illustrators and kick-off with a number of consumer
goods partners, including trading cards, collector toys, soft lines, collectible
augmented reality pins, and more.

As an original “gross out”
brand of the 1980s, Topps released its Garbage Pail Kids series of trading cards
in 1985, featuring hilariously revolting characters with appropriately irreverent
names. Fifteen different card series were produced over the next three years in
addition to a GPK animated series and a full slate of globally-licensed consumer
products, with ongoing product lines that continue to the present day. For its
part, Madballs launched its irregularly-shaped toy foam balls in 1986, featuring
its own proprietary and often-socially-inappropriate characters with ghastly faces,
grotesque names, and disruptively funny attitudes to match. Madballs went on to
sell tens of millions of toys, inspire a series of animated specials, and launch
an extensive consumer products program that included comic books, softlines, video
games, collectibles, seasons, and back-to-school products.

For
over three decades, Madballs and GPK have both been known as the “grossest
of the gross”, co-ruling counterculture with their pun-heavy names and subversive
humor, and this collaboration features all-new artwork that pits entire groups
of Garbage Pail Kids and Madballs’ characters against one another, as well as
individual characters from each brand in fun and tongue-and-cheek one-on-one face-offs.
Artwork will remain “authentically 80s” via all-new imagery from long-time
veterans of each brand like Jim Groman, who worked on the original Madballs brand
launch in the 1980s, and Joe Simko, an artist and illustrator whose artwork has
been prominently featured in the brand’s trading cards and packaging.

product launch partners include: Topps (trading cards), Megalopolis (two-pack

retro polyester shorts that prominently feature key Madballs and GPK characters.
This July, Dynamite Entertainment will be releasing four comic issues that take
fans all the way back to the first time Madballs and GPK meet as neighbors, and
through their neighborhood spats, to simultaneous family reunions that could spark
the final meltdown of the Madball vs. GPK feud or be the bridge they need to live

21, Mt. Laurel, NJ: Dynamite announces a historic summer crossover of epic proportions,
as two beloved brands smash together in all their gross-out glory in Madballs™
vs. Garbage Pail Kids! The
two legendary franchises have been captivating audiences young and old for over
three decades, co-ruling a corner of counterculture with their pun-heavy names,
subversive humor, and inventive art and design. Now, as part of an exciting merchandising
blitz, Dynamite is proud to publish an ambitious comic book series showing just
how these misfits might get along – or destroy everything around them!

The
story is written by Sholly Fisch, experienced across a deep bibliography with
franchises like Superman, Star Wars, Scooby-Doo, Mighty Mouse, and Looney Tunes.
His award-nominated work has always balanced appealing to all ages and seamlessly
adapting franchises with passionate fanbases. Though, he holds his tongue on spoiling
which side might win in this battle. “Let’s
just say that, no matter which side you’re on, you’ll find stuff to make you laugh.
And, if you’re not careful, you may get splattered with slime or toxic waste,
too,” said writer Sholly Fisch.

Fisch
is joined by artist, Jason Crosby, known for drawing the Garbage Pail Kids already
for Topps’ latest trading card and sketch card sets. Now, he’s dove headfirst
into research to equally hone his Madballs. “I try to have my work full of
energy, movement, and splattered goop, so honestly, drawing these two franchises
is right up my alley,” said artist Jason Crosby. “My work isn’t subtle,
and I hope it explodes off the page.”

In
addition to Jason’s action and gross-packed artwork in the story, the comic series
will feature collectible variant covers by him and others. A project like this
would be incomplete without the contributions of legendary GPK artist, Joe Simko,
who contributes both an epic main cover and a trading card inspired one. Alongside
collaborator, James Groman, Simko also crafted a mind-bursting wraparound cover!

Garbage
Pail Kids kicked off its reign of irreverence in 1985 when Topps launched the
first of many trading card series featuring their trademark hilariously revolting
characters – all with clever names to match. The grossest kids you know have
since translated to animation and a continuing full slate of globally-licensed
consumer products. “The
Garbage Pail Kids and Madballs share much of the same ‘twisted’ DNA;
an irreverent 80’s sensibility, outrageous artwork and loyal fan bases that
remain passionate to this day.” says Ira Friedman, who oversees GPK licensing
at Topps. “It comes as no surprise that the anticipation and excitement for
this comics crossover is off the charts.”

For
their part, Cloudco Entertainment’s Madballs first crashed into collectors’ lives

full of slime, sludge, and worse! Writer Sholly Fisch (Superman, Scooby-Doo) brings
his all-ages expertise to these beloved franchises originating in the 1980s and

as the “grossest of the gross,” co-ruling counterculture with their
pun-heavy names and subversive humor. This all-new limited series event features
the first time these two delightfully crude forces have ever met! Your freaky
favorites, the Madballs and Garbage Pail Kids, are at it again. But this time,
the chaos can’t be confined to a single neighborhood as we trace the entire history
of Madballs-GPK feud – bursting (and oozing) out across the ages!
In
this issue: The Garbage Pail Kids and Madballs ride the range as cowpokes
(hey, someone’s got to poke those cows). But their competition to see who can
make their ghost town more ghastly soon means this town ain’t big enough for the
both of them! Plus: In the world of 1950s drag-racing greasers, there’s nobody
greasier than the Madballs and the Garbage Pail Kids! When they go head-to-disembodied
head in a drag race of souped-up hot rods (powered by the high-octane of week-old
cabbage soup), it’s winner take all! Written by Sholly Fisch, each issue features
three incredible covers: Legendary Garbage Pail Kids artist Joe Simko, series

2-pack action-figure sets being available from Megalopolis. On January 14, 2021,
Megalopolis Toys shared a Premium DNA mock-up image of one of the Madballs vs
GPK 2-pack figures featuring the characters for Bruise Brother and Mugged MARCOS,
respectively. Bruise Brother has been around since the Amtoy Series 2 release
in the ’80s, so this is a perfect ’86 matchup! A Megalopolis Premium DNA version
of Bruise Brother was on pre-order for a 2021 release with a price point of $35.
The mock up does state ‘Premium DNA’, but not sure if the Madballs VS GPK figs
will have accessories & be 6″. The GPK version will not have the revealing
pierced nipple, but a vest instead.

The
newsletter contained the ‘PRESSER’ release and four mock-up card images for the
upcoming 2-pack figures, numbering 1 through 4. The Topps company provided suggestions

April 11, 2022, Premium DNA started a ‘mailing list’ promotion: “Win an Exclusive
Madballs vs GPK signed poster
This exclusive poster is signed by both James

SHIPPING ESTIMATES!’ that the Madballs vs Garbage Pail Kids (GPK) figures had
a new estimated release period of ‘JUNE 2023’, and also updated their online website
with ‘ESTIMATED SHIP DATE: JUNE 2023’.

Per
an email blast on Friday, May 12, 2023, titled “Battletoads and Madballs
vs GPK Production Updates + Images”, Premium DNA simply stated “Production
Update: Madballs vs GPK, Estimated Ship Date: July 2023” and included ‘tooling
model’ images for all eight characters (four of each brand). Model tooling is
the end product after hands and model tools have molded, shaped, scraped, and
created the end product required to produce and manufacture the different parts
for assembly and production.

Madballs® took to their
social media channels on August 2, 2023, to start advertising for the soon-to-be-released
Premium DNA Toys crossover action figures, stating, “Baseball turns to BaseBRAWL
with the NEW Madballs vs GPK Screemin’ Meemie/Mouth Phil battle pack by @premiumdnatoys

“Duel at the Dumpster” is set, and whether they’re in for a bruising
or a mugging, chaos will ensue with the new Madballs vs GPK Badballs Biker Edition
Bruise Brother vs Mugged Marcus by @premiumdnatoys [boxing glove emoji image]”,
and on August 23, 2023, mentioning, “These 2 were never going to see eye
to eye [single eye emoji image] Monocular mayhem has broken loose with the new
Madballs Vs GPK Horn Head Vs Sy Clops battle pack by @premiumdnatoys.”

The
gallery of images within the write up contained complete backside images of the
included trading cards. The trademark contains the year of the license agreement,
‘TM & © 2021 TCFC AND TOPPS‘, which is of course
is between Those Characters From Clevaland, LLC and The Topps Company, Inc. Early
mock-up card images contained a card number on the frontside with the ‘MADBALLS
VS GARBAGE PAIL KIDS‘ long form title at the top which also included the
two sparring names. Later images, as seen directly above, contained the new truncated
‘MADBALLS VS GPK‘ title at the top and the sparring names
on a new nameplate at the bottom of the card.

March 7, 2024, DKE Toys (aka Dov Kelemer Enterprise) took to their social
media channels to announce “These officially licensed Madballs vs Garbage
Pail Kids are available now [at] www.dketoys.com. Limited to 1500 packs. Each
sealed pack has a complete set of 4 cards with art by Joe Simko” The website
stated “Madballs vs GPK Sealed Wax Pack w/ Set of 4 cards. Regular price
$15.00”, along with some deals, “Buy 2-9, get $2.50 off each” from
$30 down to $25 [if 2], and “Buy 10+, get $3.00 off each.”, from $150.00
down to $120.00 [if 10], and “Madballs vs Garbage Pail Kids. Sealed
Wax Pack w/ Set of 4 cards. Art by Joe Simko. Fully licensed and limited to 1,500
packs. These packs were planned as an incentive with an $80 toy pre-order.“
Unknown whether pre-orders still in production with Premium DNA or whether packs
will be included at this point, or most likely a similar or equal item.

Per
GPK News’ investigative reporting, “According to [SideKick Labs], the packs
ended up being part of a liquidation event. DKE Toys now owns all 1500 packs and
began selling them on their website last week. These cards are the ones that were
licensed by Topps and intended for the PremiumDNA preorder.” Per PremiumDNA,
via GPK News, “Collectors who preordered will now receive two packs of cards.
Pack one will contain the same cards, except printed as foil cards. Pack two will
be sticker cards with the B names of the characters. Both packs will come in different
color wax wrappers to differentiate them from the originals. Additionally, these
packs will be limited to /750.”

MADBALLS VS
GPK: TWISTED DNA COLLECTIBALLS — WAVE 1

On
October 1, 2023, while attending the New York Toy Fair in NYC, Premium DNA took
to social media to officially announce a different direction for the dueling IP
duos, stating, “Madballs Vs GPK: Twisted DNA CollectiBALLS have arrived!
Brainy Janie and Oculus Orbus joined forces in the lab to bring the Madballs Vs
GPK conflict to an end, but the experiments have gone horribly wrong! What
happens when Madballs DNA and GPK DNA get twisted together? GPK as Madballs! Madballs
that look like GPK’s! The new Madballs Vs GPK: Twisted DNA CollectiBALLS
take us back to the core of Madballs with an exciting new twist, with highly detailed
and beautifully painted foam balls! Wave 1 includes New Wave Dave, Ghastley Ashley,
Drew Blood, Slobulus, Lock Lips, and Dust Brain!”

Artist
JOE Simko also chimed in on the same day, stating, “Prototypes of my GPK
x Madballs designs at NY Toy Fair this weekend. from Premium DNA Toys.” This
new wave will be far more classic in nature, having no body and a head only…
Premium DNA also reiterated, “These will be squishy foam like the original
Madballs!” Premium DNA also had their new full-bodied GPK Classic Series
1 prototypes on display; more information within the GPK Licenses: 2023 page.

April 30th, 2021, Greg Rivera took to social media to share the exclusive Mishka
trading card to collectors stating: Since I just received the newsletter and I
think it would be fun for everyone here to see it first, my brand Mishka is part
of the GPK vs Madaballs collaboration excitement. As a GPK fan, the idea of creating
a card for this was essential. Although Topps didn’t allow us to sell a card,
they did say we could produce one as a giveaway! So the first 300 people that
buy one of our collaboration t-shirts will get one of these limited officially
licensed and maybe the first ever?! Mishka + GPK vs Madballs card! I designed
the front and back & my favorite modern GPK artist, Joe Simko, brought it
to life. he absolutely kiled it and I hope everyone enjoys it. Sorry it had to
be a limited thing, I was hoping I could sell it as an open run, but that’s the
way it goes sometimes! PS, this will be first to market on the NTWRK app at 5pm

GPK logo and nameplate. On Monday, 05/03/2021, Justin Gammon shared an animated
gif of the trading card to social media.
Madballs, NTWRK and other sources
all posted to social media on 05/05/21, the day before the launch to promote the
upcoming drop and stating: Drop goes down tomorrow at 8PM ET / 5PM PT. first 300
people who buy this shirt will get an official Topps x Madballs x Mishka Trading

On
release day, 05/06/2021, a much cleaner version of Greg Rivera’s message was posted
to the NTWRK drop stating: If someone asked us if we had a choice [chance] to
collaborate between GPK vs Madballs, I think just like ADAM Bomb, our heads would
explode! So that’s why when we were asked if we wanted to be an official apparel
partner between a new project called ‘Madballs vs GPK’, we felt this must of been
a gross-out dream come true, and it was! For our first drop, we had our favorite

Per social media on 06/19/2021, the president and co-owner, Greg Rivera posted:

out was either 290 or still 300; more than the limited amount are often printed
for replacements, handouts, et cetera.

March 24, 2021, PinFinity set up a ‘Register for Early Access’ page to be notified
“first” via email of their first installment of AR Madballs vs. GPK
pins, and shared an image of the first series of pins that would be available.
The ad showed the first, longer ‘Madballs vs. Garbage Pail Kids’ title. Artists
Joe Simko, whom created the artwork for the pin backs, shared some final artwork
on social media the days to follow.

On
April 15, 2021, the pre-order of the three pins went live. Collectors could pre-order
