A Historical Garbage Pail Kids Reference Guide

*

RELEASE PERIOD : AUGUST 2019

The Horrorible Kids Series 4 set was released during the summer of 2019,
on August 20th. The entire set was created by artist Mark Pingitore who sketched
and painted all 45 characters to create a ninety, twin-card parody release poking
fun at the horror film genre. The creative title is a play on both of the words
‘horror’ and ‘horrible’. The first print run box, containing one asterisk,

* © 2019 MARK PINGITORE – MAGIC MARKER ART, LLC
,
was posted to his Magic Marker Art website for $75, along with a plethora of other
HK inventory such as posters, printing plates and an enamel trading pin.
The ‘PEEL HERE‘ stickers and display box have an ingenious
tombstone-esque die cut and cut out which is a nice reminder of early GPK
releases with special die-cut stickers.

At the same time, a 2nd print
run pre-order of Horrorible Kids Series 3 also ran on the Magic Marker
Art website for one month, from June 1, 2019 through June 30, 2019, and was available
starting on August 9, 2019. Instead of boxed packs as the 1st print run, this
was a mini-box release with just the full set with brand-new puzzle backs. The
90-card, 45-character set encompasses a re-release of the HK1 and HK2
sets on vintage style cardstock format along with the new HK3 material.
Per the MMA website, each box came with: A full 90 card Series 1—3 base set
(45 characters, each with an “a” and “b” alias), 2nd Printing
(trademark line; *
© 2019 MARK PINGITORE – MAGIC MARKER ART, LLC
),
Vintage style cardstock (die-cut stickers!), and BACK ART (puzzles).

~ Horror film character: Captain Spaulding played by Sid
Haig.
def’n: Sadistic — Deriving pleasure from inflicting pain
on someone, et cetera.

46b
I HUNT HUGH

~ Nomenclature = ‘I Hunt You’,
a play on the phrase ‘I Want You (for the U.S. Army)’.
~ Horror film

def’n: ‘I Want You’ — Uncle
Sam U.S. Army recruiting poster designed by J. Montgomery.
def’n: Hunt

THE
TERROR-IBLE
TRUTH
:

~ The clowning-around character can be seen in the same position as the famous
“I Want You for the U.S. Army” recruiting poster, designed by James
Montogomery, but instead of a dead-serious expression of Uncle Sam, the murdurous
maniac has a manic smile. The killer is holding a victim’s dismembered forearm
and comedically using it to point.
~ The artwork is also a nice tribute to
the OS3 GPK character for cards 110a Snooty SAM and 110b U.S. ARNIE, painted by
artists John Pound, that is also a humorous parody of the Uncle Sam poster. The
character was painted as a commission piece but used with permission within the
set and found on the retail poster and as a 9-piece puzzle.

~ Horror film parody: Gremlins (1984).
def’n: ‘Late

THE
TERROR-IBLE
TRUTH
:

~ The main antagonist of the movie and parody character can be seen in the midst
of troublemaking and raiding a fridge for a midnight snack. The opposite of the
playful and kind Mogwai that is Gizmo (aka Giz), the mean and nasty gremlin is
the end result after breaking one of the three golden rules of caring for a Mogwai:
NO water, NO bright light, and NO food after midnight.
~ The card layout is
found with a yellow and red logo, a nod to the rare OS1 GPK logo for cards 18a
and 18b Bad BRAD, painted by artists John Pound; both being evil characters.

~ The artwork was intended to be used for the Philly Non-Sport promo card for
the 70th show in May of 2019, but the artwork for card 50a Edgy EDDIE was chosen
instead.

~ Nomenclature = Valak (aka Valac, Volac, Valu, etc).
~ Horror
film character: Valak; the demonic nun.
def’n: Valac — A demon

as an angelically winged boy riding a two-headed dragon.

47b VENTIN’

~ Nomenclature = A play on the word
‘Convent’.
~ Horror film parody: The Nun (2018); a spinoff of The Conjuring
2.
def’n: Convent — A Christian community under monastic vows,
especially those of nuns.
def’n: Vent — A way to expel pent-up
rage, anger or dispair.

THE TERROR-IBLE
TRUTH
:

~ The artwork depicts a demonic nun slapping a ruler to her palm, a warning to
any disobedient rule breakers, or non-law-abiding miscreant, that the corporal
punishment for such blasphemy would be some good old-fashion knuckle-rapping or
ruler slapping. The manipulative demon ‘possesses’ demonic powers, shapeshifting,
telepathy, the ability to block clairvoyance, intimidation, possession, etc.

HOUSE FRY

~ Nomenclature = Housefly.

~ Horror film parody: The Fly (1986).
def’n: Housefly —
A common small fly occurring worldwide around human habitation.

THE
TERROR-IBLE
TRUTH
:

~ In the movie, the character completes a teleportation device and tests the machine
out on himself; an undetected housefly slips into the device during the process
and the character slowly changes into a fly due to cell muatation complications
and turns into a monster. The music score contains titles such as ‘Seth &
the Fly’ and ‘Brundlefly’ to show the relationships of the separate and combined
human and insect. The artwork humorously depicts the transformed character holding
a fly swatter; an implement used for swatting and killing small insects.

def’n: Dull — Lacking excitement (person). Lacking sharpness
(tool).

THE
TERROR-IBLE
TRUTH
:

~ The artwork shows the character sporting his avant-garde attire and hands made
out of scissors. The original concept depicts the character much like his movie
counterpart with long pointy scissors, but this was changed during the color rough
stage to the character containing only toddler’s safety scissors for hands; this
raising the bar of humor as well as the cuteness level, even though the character’s
face still depects some cutting mishaps.
~ The popular character can be found
as the box and wrapper mascot of the release, a 9-card puzzle, as a promo card
for the 70th Philly Non-Sport card show in May of 2019, limited edition poster,
and as the first enamel pin released for the series.

The Toxic Avenger (1986).
def’n: Toxic — A poisonous material;

THE
TERROR-IBLE
TRUTH
:

~ The artwork depicts the movie’s main character in his occupational role as a
health club janitor, post bullying. The character is tricked into wearing a pink
tutu and kissing a sheep; he’s chased around the club and out a second story window
where he lands in a drum of toxic waste, which sets him on fire. The transformation
ensues gifting the deformed creature the power of superhuman size and strength.
The artworks shows the character mopping up toxic waste, but also references the
tutu and the ballet stance ‘en pointe’ or on pointe; a stance on a ballerina’s
toes that requires tremendous strength of the legs and feet. The color combination
is a shout-out to the gender-bending image of OS3 GPK character for cards 118
Half-NELSON and 118b Glandular ANGELA, painted by artist John Pound.

~ Horror film

THE
TERROR-IBLE
TRUTH
:

~ The artwork showcases all of the characteristics of the horned, anthropomorphic
folklore figure that’s described as half-goat and half-demon. During the Christmas
season he punishes children who have misbahaved, in contrast with Saint Nicholas
(Kris Kringle) who rewards well-behaved children with gifts. In several regions
he is considered to be a companion of Saint Nicholas (observed on December 6)
having pre-Christian origins. The figure is often depicted as being hairy with
brown-black fur, cloven hooves, horns of a goat, a long, pointed tongue lolling
out, fangs, carrying chains – believed to symbolize the binding of the Devil
– thrashing them about for dramatic effect, and bundles of burch branches,
of pagan origins, used to swat at children with.

THE TERROR-IBLE
TRUTH
:

~ The artwork depicts the a minor antagonist of the movie, Charley Brewster’s

and before she’s saved. The character is seen in white dress, but in the stance
of Marilyn Monroe, who also wore a white dress in the 1955 film The Seven year
Itch
, in the famous scene and image of her standing above a NYC subway grating
blowing the dress up as she’s attempting to hold it down, laughing and looking
sexy … not quite pulled off by Amy Peterson who’s drooling profusely with a

def’n:
Four-leaf clover — A clover leaf with four leaflets rather than the typical

THE
TERROR-IBLE
TRUTH
:

~ The artwork depicts all of the fun stereotypes of a leprechaun and their pot
of gold, plus rapster bling, minus the rainbow. Standing on a pile of gold, covered
in diamonds. A four-leaf clover is used in the movie to suppress the leprechaun’s
powers and to trap it inside a crate. Due to the actor’s shorter stature and long
history in filmmaking, Warwick Davis has starred in several pinnacle fantasy roles
such as Wicket the Ewok in Star Wars : Return of the Jedi, as Willow in
Willow, as Professor Filius Flitwick in the Harry Potter films,

along with immortality, invulnerability, etc. The same torture scene is also seen
in the movie with one of the captured victims. The character also plays a role

THE
TERROR-IBLE

:

~ The artwork showcases the executioner or punisher more in his movie incarnation,
with a more angular and jagged helmet, his robes not covering his chest and completey
obscuring his legs, held on by belts. The humanoid monster is seen wielding his

THE TERROR-IBLE
TRUTH
:

~ The artwork takes the theatrical release poster concept of the malevolent alien

several steps further. The full-on attack and attach-mode of the larvae gives
the character a red-haired sea anemone appearance while she’s being attacked and

THE
TERROR-IBLE

Georgie is seen sailing a boat, crafted by his brother, along the rainy streets.
Pennywise the Dancing Clown entices Georgie closer to the storm drain where he
bites off his arm and drags him into the sewer. The artwork depicts Georgie’s
severed limb within the S.S. Georgie boat floating down a river of his own blood
while he’s holding the famous read balloon, one of the enticing tools Pennywise

THE TERROR-IBLE
TRUTH
:

~ Although Leatherface is the main antagonist of the first movie, the painting
depicts Chop Top, the twin brother of Leatherface and the main antagonist of the
second installment. The hippie attire references Bobby Sawyer’s time spent in
Vietnam where he received his head wound by a machete and originally referred

the Gill-man (land) character and the Gill-man (underwater) character. The artwork
is a nice tribute to the theatrical release poster which shows the Creature holding
actress Julia Adams, but both characters appear underwater, within the black lagoon,
rather than on land. And, besides the white, one-piece swimsuit worn by Kay, the
Creature is sporting his own white garment, albeit, a wet diaper.

Art’s future Horrorible Kids Series 4 release, sometime in 2019, and in
conjuction with the 69th/October Philly Non-Sport Card Show as an exclusive promo
card. The first mock-up card image below showcases the color rough artwork with
a nostalgic ‘PEEL HERE‘ arrow and ‘PNS2018‘
card number; an acronym for Philly Non-Sports. The second mock-up card image shows
the final artwork with the arrow absent since the promo card is not printed on
sticker stock with a card number of ‘NSU2018‘; an acronym
for the Toser’s sold publication Non-Sport Update. The numbering reverted
back to ‘PNS2018‘ for the finished card and as seen in the
final promo card ad further below.

A third Promo Image was revealed on 10/31/2018 as an upcoming character
for Magic Marker Art’s future Horrorible Kids Series 4 release, originally
created as a commissioned artwork piece, and later advertised as a promo card
to social media on 02/01/2019 in conjuction with the 4th Gross Card Con as an
exclusive promo card. The first ‘poster’ mock-up image below showcases the final
artwork with a nostalgic ‘I WANT YOU [FOR U.S. ARMY]‘ tagline
and a sadistic parody of Uncle Sam [U.S.] and similar to GPK OS3 110a Snooty
SAM
and 110b U.S. ARNIE. The second set of
GCC ad images shows the final artwork for Marveless Kids promo card Adios
THANOS
with card number ‘GCC2019a‘ and Horrorible
Kids promo card SID Distic with card number ‘GCC2019b‘;
both reverse card backs display three images for each upcoming set, available
spring and summer 2019, respectively. NOTE: BOTH PROMO CARD STICKERS
CAN BE FOUND WITH AN UPSIDE-DOWN TOMBSTONE DIE CUT
. Another poster, with
rearranged graphics, was released as an ‘AVAILABLE HERE‘
store display ad within the boxes.

7. On January
23, 2019, artist Mark Pingitore posted an early reveal of four Rough Sketches
for the future HK4 set stating: I’m hard at work finishing up Marveless
Kids Series 1, but also have started rough sketching from my list of ideas
for
Horrorible Kids Series 4. Here’s a sneak peek at a few of them.
45 new characters coming later this year!
The ‘Toxic TOMMY’ nomenclature became
Toxic TOBE for card 51b; the remaining nomenclature
all remained the same for the card images.

Art social media pages started to tease collectors of the impending release with
a few Color Rough sneak peeks. A parody of The Fly, stating: Working
on
Horrorible Kids – Series 4 color roughs! 45 new characters! Be afraid.
Be very afraid
. And, on April 1st, 2019, showcasing a parody of Edward Scissorhands,
stating: Another Horrorible Kids – Series 4 color rough preview. You’ll
be seeing more of this guy real soon!
Three days later the PNS promo card
was posted.

. A new Promo Card
was revealed on April 4th, 2019, as a third installment for Magic Marker Art’s
future Horrorible Kids Series 4 release in conjuction with the 70th/May
Philly Non-Sport Card Show as an exclusive promo card. The mock-up card image
shows the final artwork with an absent ‘PEEL HERE‘ arrow
— since the promo card is not printed on sticker stock — and a card
number of ‘PNS2019‘; an acronym for ‘Philly Non-Sports’
show and the release year; the deadline for the artwork was April 5th, 2019. The
Gremlin character, for cards 47a/b, was originally considered for the promo card,
but Edgy EDDIE became a top contender for the box
character and the packaging artwork needs to be completed early in production.
The character goes on to be the main mascot for the HK4 release.

10. The first
Release Ad exclaiming ‘PRE-ORDER BEGINS JUNE 1ST‘
was posted to social media mid-May on the 13th of the month giving a two-week
warning of the pre-order sale going live. Notice the box packaging side artwork
contains mainly characters painted earlier for promo cards, HORACE

was posted to social media on May 30, 2019 and the ‘PRE-ORDER ENDS
JUNE 30TH
‘ ad hit the Magic Marker Art website on May 31, 2019. The 90-card
set would mark the second full box release after the Marveless Kids release
earlier in the year. A Horrorible Kids 1-3 reprint, nicknamed the ‘TRIPLE
FEATURE
‘, was coincidingly released the same time as the HK4 box but packaged
in a mini box and sold as a complete set. The image would later read ‘24
PACK BOX – HORRORIBLE KIDS – SERIES 4
‘ once the product went live for sale
on August 20, 2019.

12. Two additional

stated ‘1 PACK – HORRORIBLE KIDS – SERIES 4‘ for one pack
containing five sticker cards and another for ‘5 PACKS – HORRORIBLE

would remain the same when the product went live and released on August 20th,
2019, several months later.

17. Per artist Mark
Pingitore, the Sleepy Hollow Concept for cards 63a Sleepy HOLLIS and 63b
NOAH Head replaced a Ghostbusters II (1989) concept,
“There was a Ghostbusters II concept that got replaced with the Sleepy Hollow
one.” The color rough shows the antagonist Vigo Von Homburg Deutschendorf
(aka Vigo the Carpathian), a medieval tyrant and sorcerer, standing over
a pile of skulls and bones. The concept shows the nomenclature of ‘Vintage VIGO’
and ‘REN A. Sance’ (renaissance).
The cards for 73a Creepin’ TOM and 73b Spyin’
RYAN replaced the original Creepshow concept, “That was a concept based on
one of the Creepshow stories, Tide You Over. It got to color rough, but I decided
to do the more recognizable Creepshow poster parody instead.” The concept
shows the nomenclature of ‘High TY’ and ‘WALTER Logged’. Both concepts can be
seen on the original 45-card layout, but not the replacements; it is unknown at
this time if they’ll show up in any future release. A third concept for ‘Jeepers
Creepers’ (‘Creep EARL’) may have been replaced by the ‘Brightburn’ parody which
is not located on the original line-up of characters.
